Upload new smileys feature?
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)
Posted by: IceBreaker
Title sums it up
Members could add their own smileys to the website database, the tags would be == smiley filename (ie. uploading abc.gif => corresponding tag = :abc: )
I suppose there would be a file & image size limit (say, 20k max for file size would be reasonable enough)
Beats having to enter smiley url into our posts http://img208.echo.cx/img208/6877/megacool9zn.gif

Way to argue. Concise & to the point.

I dont' see the huge advantage that we are going to get from this due to the higher server use, space, and other parts of it.... If you really like that smiley, just copy and paste the URL.

Server space & use? Sure... like we're talking about 1280x1078 bitmap images
The advantages are obvious - these new smileys would be part of the OTS database itself, along with the others - in a way it might even speed up things. Furthermore when pasting an "external" url there is nothing to garantee than the url will remain valid, and the user can end up posting a dead link.
There could be an upper limit - say, max. 20 smileys per user, along with image & file size limit like I previously said. Or for example only "senior" users (say, past 1000+ posts, 1+year membership, whatever) would have that privilege ^^ Upon uploading a smiley the admins could make sure it is "OTS-compliant", in addition to the size criterion...

I love you IceBreaker! I myself don't have my own cache of smileys I can use due to crappy free web storage service, so this helps a great deal. Are the smiley's you upload available to everybody? And where do you upload them?

Vman> welcome to the "users who want a smiley upload feature" elite club http://forum.presence-pc.com/icones/smilies/sol.gif
The smileys? I just "leech" them from other sites http://www.fintoys.net/yabb/yabbima...ies/pleased.gif
Mainly other forums' smiley databases -
So of course they're available to everyone
The snag is, the site can go offline. Or the image - even though small - takes some time to load due to some bug in the website. Sometimes the website can also (rarely) change its address, in which case basically you're scr**ed. Or the url stays the same, but the webmaster decides to change the image itself...
Hence the idea of being able to add these smileys to the local OTS database, which would help avert such problems...

But I'm asking how do you add it to the database.
Posted by: IceBreaker
http://forum.presence-pc.com/images...xavontheweb.gif but you cannot add it to the database - yet. That's precisely the feature I'm asking for - hence my posting in the 'suggestions & feedback' forum
