I've had Sims 2 and Sims 2 University for a while, both working fine. Didn't play for a couple of months and now cannot get beyond the EA Games Splash. Once that comes up the screen goes black and stays that way. If I bring up the Windows Task Manager it tells me that the game is not responding. Nothing dramatic has changed on the computer - everything else still works. I have the latest DirectX and a Radeon 9800 video card. The disks look fine and I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling - the same thing happens with Sims 2 on its own and the University expansion pack. Any ideas out there?

Try getting update patches for the game / expansion.
Update your Videocard driver.
Overheating? Open the PC case door and run it like that, and see if it helps? If you have got any "table fan"? Aim it at the case.
If it does. Get a couple of proper sized case fans. 1 in the front of the case , sucking in air. And one in the rear, exhausting hot air.
Good Case fans: Enermax, Panaflo, Sunon and Vantec.
If your case, does'nt have any fan mounts? Get a "Exhaust blower fan" (See left picture). Costs about 5 USD. Or and / Antec "Vcool" Slot Video card cooler ( See right picture). Place it near the video card. But not next to the video card! Leave a slot between, for best placement.
If you are planning on getting both the Exhaust blower, and Antec Vcool.? Best placement is to have the "exhaust blower , above the video card. And the "Vcool " under the video card.

Thanks for the advice. Bizarrely enough, today everything just started up again of its own accord. I won't question it, just accept that there are some things I don't need to understand!
