PS2 Trouble

Anyone know why a PS2 would just stop playing games? Somedays it works fine. Somedays just some games won't play. Today it won't allow any games to play. The memory card is pretty old but would that stop the games from loading? The furtherst it will go is to the configuration screen.

You'd think the memory card wouldn't do anything for loading, but just to be sure, have you tried a game without the memory card?
