My daughter leaves AOL chat 'away' messages on her computer for hours at a time, is that a problem, should I continue to ask her to put computer on standby if she is to be gone for hours?

nope. today's computers are perfectly happy running 24/7. youll save a bit of electricity, but theres no other purpose to standby for just a few hours.

so there is no hacking problems or the such? I am using a LAN connection, thru a router, should I also use a firewall?

As long as you have a good firewall and such, should be fine. AOL provides most of what you need, you just need to activate it if you havn't already
