Computer freezes when listen to mp3s, video, and games

I have a computer thats 3 months old it a GIGABYTE GA-7N400S-L motherboard with a AMD Athlon XP 3200+ Barton 400MHz FSB. It works fine all the time, but if I play to many mp3s it freezes or if I'm playing a game it freezes. Also my screen saver makes it free. I think it has something to do with the sound, but I cant figure out what it is. I have downloaded all new drivers, reinstall the xp pro several times. I cant seem to figure out what is causing it or how to solve it. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated

If you think its the sound then disable it in BIOS, and see if it keeps happening, if it is the sound then not only upgrade the sound drivers, but update windows, and the BIOS and see what happens.

Also update your chipset driver.
Download "Everest home" And check out what "Northbride Chipset" you got?
Then make a note of it and visit the manufacturers home, for a new chipset driver.

Have you cleaned your fans and stuff lately?
Run the PC with the case door open. This to see if you got overheating problems?

I updated windows, the bios, and the sound driver, the northbridges drivers.. and it still frooze when there was to much sound for a long period of time. I disabled the sound in bios and it never frooze.. Im not sure where to go from here.. now that I know its not the drivers and it is the sound..

I guess this is an onboard sound card?
As you have updated all the drivers, that matters, and still no cigar.
Maybe it is time to get a PCI soundcard instead?

Creative is the mayor manufacturer of sound cards.
And they got a bunch of models to choose from.

Their cheapest model "Creative Soundblaster live" is a good choise, if you want an O.k. soundcard with no "Chills and thrills".

It's about 25 USD at the webshops. But down at the Mart, I guess you can find it even cheaper.

A new varity of this card is : CREATIVE External Sound Blaster Live! SB0490 6 (5.1) Channels 24-bit 48kHz in 5.1 mode and up to 96kHz in stereo mode USB Interface Sound Card - Retail $46.99 at newegg webshop. An external USB sound card have some nice gains.

1. You dont get electromagnetical disturbanses from the other hardware as you can get sometimes, with an internal soundcard.

2. All the connections to the card is easy acessable.

I myself, use the Creative Audigy 2 NX External soundcard.

Here is Creatives "middle row sound card": CREATIVE Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Value SB0400 8 (7.1) Channels 24-bit 192KHz PCI Interface Sound Card - OEM. $49.99

If you whant a top notch soundcard, I recommend:

CREATIVE Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS SB0350 8 (7.1) Channels 24-bit 192KHz PCI Interface Sound Card - OEM $71.00

CREATIVE Sound Blaster Audigy2 NX 70SB030000000 8 (7.1) Channels 24-bit 96KHz USB Interface External USB Sound System - Retail $99.99

As I said earlier, the 2 NX is the card I have. I've used it for about 1 1/2 year now, and have only good things to say about it.

You can find all those cards here:

Ok if you did all of that stuff in your first post, are you still using the same media player? If so, try a different one, sometimes its just that particular build of that particular player.

Also, playing mp3 or games make heavier use of two things, the hd and your ram. Run some sort of disc checker on your hd. And run memtest.

This morning I enabled the sound and took the side panel off my case to see if it would freeze while I was at work. Well it didnt.. So Iguess this means its been freezing due to overheating? I know I can buy a new soundcard I just hate to do that. Ive looked all over to see if anyone else with the same motherboard has had this problem and they have not.

Posted by: SyNick

Well if the motherboard is still under warranty then take it back, otherwise you will have no other choice but to put in a sound card. They are really cheap now days. If you dont want to spend that much on a sound card, then probably just go to the markets and buy a second hand one.

Try adding a fan to the system, they are cheap.

hello whiteliteboi!
I have the same mainboard 7N700SL and also i have the same problem..
Actually I have an soundblaster live24 and the problem is still exists ..
I try an other soundlaster live value and my system freezing all time!!!
I think that is a mainboard problem....
RMA your shit-board immediatelly!!!
Gigabyte will returns you a new k8-board or your money back!

Why don't you try doing some other CPU intensive application and let it run. I know goranpaa recommended Prime95 and its TortureTest utility.

See if system freezes during testing, if so sounds like overheating problem. Perhaps some arctic silver thermal paste and a volcano like cpu cooler is in order?

Sometimes if you bang your head on a wall too many times you miss the fact there's a pillow sitting right next to you...

Download motherboard monitor to check for excessive CPU and motherboard temps.

Posted by: Charllestone

my temps are ok
I have an AthlonXP3200 on 45C temp!
I run the prime test at 24hours and it doesn't show me any error.
I run also Memtest , Souper PI , CPU stability tests and all of them complete all tests succesfully!
Memtest was running on my system over than 16hours...
I try to update bios , to mod bios , to change all of bios settings by default but the problem still appears....Before 3 months I had an chaintech mainboard with nforce2 ultra chipset and my system was working fine!
But I have a sound problem with onboard soundchip and I got the board for RMA.
After that I buy the gigabyte 7n400SL board and in the same day that I change mainboard the "System Freeze" problem start...
So I'm 99,9% sure that this shit-board has problem...I have a friend with the same board and also the same problem
so....I WOULD HAVE KNOWN IF ANYONE (WHITCH HE HAS THIS BOARD) IS WORKING WITHOUT PROBLEMS...I THINK THAT ALL THE 7N400 LOW COST SERIES HAVE TROUBLES....there aren't credible boards....
(sorry from my bad English ..)

Reading all this about that mobo, I'm inclined to agree. I think that a change to a ASUS, Epox, ABIT or MSI mobo with Nforce chipset would be a relief.

Posted by: Charllestone

yes but there is no any k7board that still buying esspecially an msi asous abit or epox...
All companies have stoped to support any k7 proccessor...I don't know...I might go to an Athlon64 cpu and mainbord update...It's shame...My CPU is very fast and is still antagonistic with the other amd and intel cpu's....DAMN GIGABYTE...

EPoX EP-8RDA3+PRO Socket A (Socket 462) NVIDIA nForce2 Ultra 400 ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail $69.99

ABIT NF7-S2 Socket A (Socket 462) NVIDIA nForce2 Ultra 400 ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail $60.00

MSI K7N2 Delta2-FSR Socket A (Socket 462) NVIDIA nForce2 Ultra 400 ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail $58.95

Prices: newegg.

Posted by: Charllestone

Hmm.............Let me think.............
I'm going to got my board to rma and get my money back....go on buying one of these m/b

Posted by: goranpaa

The ABIT is a nice one.
By the way. Is that Gigabyte an ATX mobo or Micro ATX?
Just make sure one of those mobo fits? They are all full ATX mobos.
ATX = 12.0" x 9.6"
But I also saw Micro ATX, socket A mobos. If you need one of those?

Posted by: Charllestone

Its ATX..
Yes I know.....

O.k.

Have anyone found any mod bios for gigabyte 7N400S-L?

All of these problems may appear because of faulted bios...I try the f4 and also the f5 bios but nothing change....I mod the bios with modbin6 , I unlocked the volt settings but a new problem appears.
The v-dim has the setting "normal +0.1 +0.2 +0.3" but the normal,+.01 and the +0.3 option works on 2.7volt and only the +0.2 work with 2.8volt.
Also the v-core doesn't work.An other problem(that happens with all bios f4,f5) is that when I try to enable the "USB Legacy Keyboard and mouse" in bios , the mouse works and stops at 10 min periodically in linux , but also in dos mod my keyboard sometimes doesn't work. Also the power button doesn't turn off my pc in dos mod , but cause a system freeze....ALL OF THESE PROBLEMS APPEAR WHEN THE USB LEGANCY IS ENABLED!...It's probably a bios problem....SHIT!
I sent a mail to Gigabyte but didn't give me any answer.......Anyway....
SHIT SHIT SHIT!!!

Posted by: goranpaa

This is a german bios download site. But the BIOS for your board is listed there. BIOS date 2005-04-04

http://www.zdnet.de/treiber/man_pro...bios_ud-wc.html

Posted by: Charllestone

Yes goranpaa , but this is the same f5 bios in gigabyte's site.....

The board has the ITE it5712f controller witch provides that the cpu and also vdimm overvoltage work fine....Because of this I consider that is a bios problem and not a hardware problem....The other models from gigabyte(as 7n400pro2 etc) have the same ITE.....and their bios work fine...
Do you know anything about it? Anyway....

I Should go for RMA.....

Posted by: goranpaa

Yeah, Probably the best move.
