SP4 caused explorer.exe error

Hi guys,

A friend wanted me to get rid of some spyware and install windows.

First thing I did was install updates (SP4) from the auto-update. On restart after update and logging in, i got the error that:

"explore.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You will need to restart the program.

An error log is being created."

meh, that sucks. So from here if I try to go to task manager i get:

"the dynamic link library VDMDBG.dll could not be found in the specified path (lists different paths in C:\winnt\system32\"

I'm thinking there may have been a virus on the system, but either way how should I proceed from here?

I get the exact same thing if I boot in safe mode.

Boot from floppy and copy the misisng .dll? I guess thats what I'm going to do next boot from floppy run diagnostics (scandisk, etc.)

Is there a way I can do a restore without being able to load windows? Any ideas are appreciated.

Specs:
win2000 pro SP3 (just upgraded to 4 which caused problem)
celeron 1 ghz
256 mb ram

yes, you can just restore the registry. the file isnt missing, the entry is corrupted. make sure you clean the system before installing any update to the OS.

ok, I tried to do an emergency repair from the win2k cd. Still getting same issue.

I was thinking I could disable explorer.exe, and then could get into windows to restore or reinstall update.

I can't figure out how I can boot and be able to edit the system.ini file to use progman.

If I boot from a DOS floppy, I can't access the c: partition.

If I boot from the recover console command prompt on the cd, it doesn't include the edit command. Is there another command I could use to edit system.ini?

thanks

looks like the partition is a HPFS hmmmm

There is no volume label

Ok, well I did the full restore from CD, on the setup menu.

So problem solved I guess.

Can anyone answer my question about how I could have edited the system.ini file from command line?
