hey guys i've checked the forum just in case but i found nothing on this one..i'[m gettin a blinking cursor when i bootup on the lefthand corner of the screen, and the rest of the screen is black , i'm really beginning to get frustrated.... i'm thinking ,since when i got the computer it had a different vid card, and i went and changed it because the port that the old card had was not compatible with my monitor ......any suggestions...

This isn't really a specific error and can be related to many things. My computer does this occassionally if I try to boot with my printer plugged in after a forced shutdown.
If you let it sit there for 5 minutes, does it go away? Are you on a network or dial-up connection?

actually i'm a stand alone and i have no modem, what happened was that i took out the hd that the comp came with and put in my own ......and now this is happening.

Open it up and see if you can reset the CMOS.

There should be a jumper on the motherboard that enables you to reset the CMOS. Check your motherboard manual.
I don't think that will help anyways. I think your power supply is bad or not compatible with your motherboard. Which is quite possible if it's not a recommended power supply or it's old.

If you own an Asus motherboard...don't bother to look for a jumper to clear CMOS. They are too cheap to do this. Instead...look for 2 metal solder points that you can short using a flat screwdriver. Got to love the Asus way...I know...I had to use the screwdriver once.
Got the same blinking cursor that time also...but it was due to a bad CPU clock multiplier.
I would try resetting the CMOS first before checking for a bad power supply. It only takes a few seconds.

Ack you're right Chako. I confused this person with the other one who was getting strange voltage readings.

To me, a blinking cursor indicates that the CPU, motherboard, RAM and video are ok on a basic level. The monitor doesn't know how to draw a little white square if the BIOS and video can't tell it how.
Now that I think about it, the RAM may be the problem. It may be trying to count the RAM. Dunno. It could be anything. That may be why the company gave it away in the first place.

hey guys listen to this, i did this on a hunch and it worked maybe someone will know what the problem is.. i took out the hd that i origionally put in and i had another laying around with nt server on it...when i booted up it worked... so i'm wondering maybe i have to repartition and reformat the first hd, but the first hd already has win98se on it .so i'm a little confused......why did it work with nt......could it be because the nt hd is smaller...the origional was a 8gig and the nt is 2.5 gig.arrrrgh!!!1

Did you detect the new HD with the IDE detection in your CMOS? Sometimes you have to do that on some boards for a hard drive to be detected properly.
