Cd-rom / Dvd-rom

Could anyone possible explain why, upon pressing the button, my CD-ROM has around a 4 or 5 second delay in opening (this did not always exist), while my burner hits my hand opening because I can't move out of the way fast enough?

This won't matter for long, as I am about to replace it with a DVD-ROM, but it is still quite annoying.

On a side note, could anyone make some recommendations on a fast, reliable, and reasonably priced DVD-ROM drive? I'm mostly looking for a brand name, as prices will vary - But for anyone who has experience with DVD-ROm technology, what tends to be the most reliable?

WEll if you're like me, you don't use your CD-ROM/DVD-ROM that much except for the rare installation. I have both a generic 8X and 12X and both work fine. Just make sure when you get one that it comes with a new version of PowerDVD. WinDVD sucks.

As for the blinking issue, i'm not sure on that. I think it's determined by the firmware of the drive. I have autorun disabled and it seems to speed it up some.

My CD-ROM drive does the same exact thing. It delays about 3 seconds, while my CD-RW opens right away.

You got it the wrong way around. I like WinDVD. PowerDVD is one of the biggest pieces of crap I've ever seen
