Hello, not to long ago i was messing with mconfig, which is a thing that lets you select services and thing you want to start up when you turn your computer on, and I used this thing called autorun which deletes things and I deleted a few thing that didnt look necessesary. Then I found out my sound is not working. I went to dxdiag and it says this when I test directsound:
DirectSound test results: Failure at step 3 (DirectSoundCreate): HRESULT = 0x88780078 (No driver)
but when I go to test direct music music comes out of my speakers. I tried reinstalling drivers that came on the cd which is a soundmax driver. And when I got to control panel, Sound and Audio devices does not let me select a playback device and but i have the driver installed.
My motherboard is a ASUS P4P800 and my onboard soundcard is a AC97

Ok im not sure exactly where u went but maybe u went into startup in ur msconfig u might try going back in there and rechecking ur sndmn or anything that might have to do with ur sound then it will ask u to restart ur comp also might try and go into ur bios if u were in there before and make sure ur on board sound is enabled

Try resetting windows to a restore point, when you know your sound worked.
Or use CHKDSK.
Even try a registry repair, like Registry Mechanic.

Where do i got to use CHKDSK, I tried registry mechanic but i have to buy the full version for it to fully work. I enabled all in msconfig. Still not working
What is a way to tell exactly what my onboard card is and what driver it needs.

come on people i need help

Go to device manager and uninstall your sound card, when Windows restarts it should reinstall the drivers.

You might have disabled the Windows Sound service. Just a thought.

how would i get windows sound service working again

Go to Control Pannel, Administrative Tools, then Services. You should find Windows Sound and just right click and select properties, then change "disabled" or "manual" to "automatic" and click the "start" button.

Its not there

It should be there, "Windows Audio" I think it's on both XP Home and Pro. Run Msconfig again, and check to see if it's unchecked in the services tab.
EDIT:
If that doesn't work, then it's probably a driver issue. If you've tried rolling back your drivers and tried updating them with the manufacturer's drivers, then you will want to go to "Sounds and Audio Devices" on the control pannel. Then click audio and make sure the correct device is set up in each drop down box.

thats what im saying dude i used a program to delete some things maybe i accidently deleted it. How would i get it back.
Remember my driver is installed but my sound playback device drop box is grayed out. And when i go to Sound and Audio Devices it say no audio device on top

With the amount of time and irritation you're having with this I'd just do an OS repair install (assuming you're using XP?) and you shouldn't lose any stuff but it will re-detect all your hardware and load basic Windows drivers for everything.

If I remember, you lose settings and such. That's what happened when I did a repair install last. Was a rightful pain in the arse to set all my settings.

You couldn't uninstall the Windows Audio Service, as far as I'm aware. Anyways, I think someone recommended going to Device Manager and uninstalling your audio then restarting. If this doesn't work, then I guess you could try a repair install.

Don't remember losing anything major when I've done it but as it doesn't look like anybody has a solution I can't really see any other options?

Hi All,
Although I didn't change my msconfig I have the same problem as Rei'c. He mentions something about a windows repair but what settings did he use? Can someone help me out?
Thanx

If you have Windows XP?
Then you can perform a repair of Windows. This will not affect your installed programes.
Just uninstall your videocard driver if it is'nt WHQL certified Or if you are unsure it is. This to avoid problems during the repair. Go to control panel, add / remove programmes. For uninstallation of the driver.
Here you have a instruction how to do a repair of Windows XP:
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
EDIT: You will have to reinstall SP2 and additional Windows updates after the repair. And of coarce the video card driver.
