Maxtor 5400rpm 40 gig hard drive on a P133

ok.

I bought a Maxtor 5400rpm 40 gig Hard Drive today. My intentions was to put it into my poopy little P133. I read the back of the box and it says that a PII is recommened for the minium specs. I saw this and decided to buy anyways ( I can always return it).

anyways, Im gonna have Gerb come over and try to install it tomorrow. I was just wonderin if its gonna work or not. It says on the box "For P-I class processors, Maxtor recommends using the Maxtor Ultra ATA PCI Adapter". I dunno, I'm just curious to what everyone says about this whole situation.

thanks

I would say there's a 100% chance that it will not work. The BIOS on that board I highly doubt will support such a big hard drive.

A PCI ATA controller card may get around this limitation since it has its own BIOS, but even then you may run into PCI 2.1 compliancy problems.

I have an ATA 100 Maxtor Controller card (Promise Technologies). I bought it for something like, 50 dollars or somewhere around that. I don't use it though, I like the ATA/66 on my board, that works well enough for me.

Other than that idea, it most likely will not work, but there's still that little gimp of a chance that it will, good luck.

Obviously, I can't type anymore....

i put a 30 gig in a P133 it only recognizes 18.4 or something like that. So if it does work I don't think the whole thing will be recognized.

It might work. I installed a 30 gig maxtor on p166 a while back and witht the HD came a floppy. On the floppy other than the usually crappy partition programs came a BIOS extension called EZ BIOS. It automatically installed itself and voila it was able to accept the 30 gig.
