Memory cards for gamecube

Is a memory card required in order to run a game? Not necessarily save it, but simply play it? I am using a Gamecube with Ghost Recon. Any help you can give me would be appreciated.

no, a memory card isnt needed to run a game, just to save your progress

Try it with a memory card (if you have one). It may be trying to create a log for how many times you've played the game, or just desperately trying to create a save file.
The disc may be scratched. The 'Cube may be having a hard time reading the disc because one, the other, or both may need cleaning.
