Diablo/modem/battle.net help

i feel helpless..
i just got my Diablo game working again (DirectX problems, everything's fine now), and i've tried to connect to battle.net for some online multiplayer, but whenever i try to use battle.net, it brings up this message after waiting two minutes for it to "try and find the fastest server" that reads something about "Unable to establish a connection.. modem not detected.. you may have to connect automatically" something like that... I KNOW that a modem exists, how else would i be online right now? unless there's something i don't know..
can someone help me with this? if it helps, i have Diablo v. 1.02
do i need to buy a newer version? download one of those patch things? you'll have to excuse me, i don't know that much about computers..

oh yeah, and i was wrong about my Diablo version, it's not 1.02, it's 1.00 :-/

Get the latest patch for Diablo at www.blizzard.com/patches, then try connecting to Battle.net again.

Also, are you behind a router or a firewall? If so you will need to make sure each is configured.
