PS2: Middle of Screen is blank when playing a dvd

Big black box in the middle of the screen when i play a dvd. black box takes up about %75 of screen but I can still see the movie around the edges. I have never heard of such a thing. Games play fine,it only happens with dvds. Can someone please help me?

No mod chip. Everything original. I emailed Sony tech support but they havent got back to me yet. We have had the Ps2 for 2 years now and have never had any problem with it.
