Computer running slow

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

My PC has been running very slow lately, the cpu usage usually stays @ 100%. I have a AOpen AX4B-533 motherboard, running a Pentium 4 and 512mb Ram. So my first instinct add more memory so I added another 512mb and still no resolution. I scanned for viruses and spyware. Can't figure it out. Is is possible to have two bad sticks of memory? Any ideas?

Hi!

Have you used multiple virus scans?

If not try these:

http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Also download "SIS Sandra" diagnostic software. And use the "Fine Tune Wizard" To see what unnessisary services you can shut down? Windows XP is full of them.
When the Fine Tune Wiz is fininshed. Go START + RUN.
In RUN type, msconfig. And shut down what Sandra says is safe. Reboot.

Also defragment your harddrive (s).

check your list of running processes. most people have no clue how many things they have running that arent needed, aside from your virii and spyware of course. once the machine is clean, start shutting down services and 3rd party programs you dont need.

I have tried the multiple virus scans and it hasn't shown anything. I used symantec and the trend micro. On a side note, should it take 16 hours to complete the virus scan on my HD. I also did spyware scan using ad-ware and microsoft. I did the defrag and cleanup, and it is still running super slow. I have shut down most of the background apps and still slow. Any other ideas. I'm tempted to do a repair install and see if that works but I don't want to risk losing my files. Anyone know of a good memory tester.

I think that the repair install is a good idea. The risk of loosing any programs is small. The only thing you need to do. Is to reinstall SP2 and additional Windows updates after the repair.
But uninstall your videocard driver first, if it is'nt WHQL sertified. Othervise, you risk trouble when repairing.

But to be on the safe side. back up your important stuff on CD:s before repairing.

If you wanna do a memory test.

Try this: http://hcidesign.com/memtest/

Let it run for at least a couple of hours.

Well I did the install repair and still having the same problem. As soon as I open an application the CPU jumps to 100% and stays there until I close all programs. I done extensive memory testing and I know it's not the issue. I have swapped my HD into another machine, so I know its not the motherboard or processor. All signs point to spyware but the scans keep coming back clean. Plus scanning my HD usually locks the PC up. I have uninstalled all my spyware and reinstalled fresh copies and still can't find anything. Anymore ideas.

Try downloading "Hijack this". And make a special folder for it. othervice you will have the log all over the place. Then post the log here.
If that's not helping. I would suggest a reformat and a reinstall of Windows.

You may have answered your own question there. How old is the hard drive and do you do a lot of up and down loading (please do not be specific as to what you up and download btw).

Install that hd as a slave in the other pc and run the scans from that pc. If it is still slow then the hd has a problem. It should not take 16 hours to scan your hd unless you have 100s of terabytes with trillions of files. I can routinely let AVG, spybot, some media player, firefox and a cd burn run without much system drag and the AVG scan finishes in less than 2 hours, usually less than 1.

Also, what are your system specs, it is possible that your PSU is not providing enough current for your hd to be stable. Have you added any devices recently or is it an old PSU?
