this a copy /post of waht he sent me
Alright...I now have major issues with my CPU at home. I believe my motherboard is fried, and I need to replace it. I need help from people in pointing me in the right direction in what I need to get. I know I could search the web, but that is time consuming, and I'm not particularly in the mood. I was on the phone with Dell Tech support for an hour last night, and the computer was not booting and giving back a 'Memory Cannot be Read' error. We tried switching all the Ram stes, and still got the same read out. I know it's not the memory because there are no signs of damge, burns, etc. I also put the memory back to the original 2- 128MB w/2 continuity sets and nothing happened. Tech support said if it's no the memory, which the computer says it is, then it must be the motherboard. PLEASE HELP ME!
Here's some current stats on my system:

Dell Dimension 8200

P4 1.7GHz

512MB RDRAM (PC800)

40GB ATA/100 Hard Drive

250 WATT Power

And 1 Fried Motherboard.

Running Windows XP

Other Stuff:

32MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce2 4X AGP Graphics Card

I will be switching the following- (ATI RADAEON All In Wonder 9800 Pro 128MB Graphics Card)

Turtle Beach Santa Cruz DSP Sound Card

I was going to switch the graphics card, but before I booted up, I realized I needee more power. I took the card back out, re-installed the original, and then that's when the problem happened.

Hi Demi!

What he really need except a new mobo, will be a new PSU. 250 W is way to low wattage!

Here is a couple of suggestions:

ASPIRE ATX-AS520W BLACK ATX 520W Power Supply 115/230 V CB IEC 950/ TUV EN 60950/ UL 1950/ CSA 950 - Retail $55.00

Mobo:

ASUS P4P800SE Socket 478 Intel 865PE ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail $93.00

prices. newegg.

This mobo is the same Agp mobo I used before. Very good and reliable!

If he gets another cooler (Thermalright XP 90 or Vapochill Micro, High end or Extreme). He will be able to O.C. that 1.7 P4 to at least 2.1 GHz. It's as easy to do with this Asus mobo as your mobo with D.O.T.

thats like saying you know theres nothing wrong with the psu because it didnt burst into flames. he needs to run a ram test on each dimm to ensure that it isnt the problem, not just look for major signs of trauma. would be a bit of a waste to buy a new board and have the same issues.

Each stick of memory contains millions of switches any one of which could have gone duff. The query about whether it will fit is also valid as some Dell machines have proprietary boards, PSU's etc. You're in a bit of a situation as you aren't going to find many RDRAM supporting boards (because it's expensive crap (my opinion!)) so you'll probably have to buy a new MOBO, new memory and (less likely) a new CPU.
