Video cooling

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have a voodoo3 3000 PCI, it's notorious for overheating in games at even medium resolutions (1024 for UT and 1280 for HL), this is with settings on low in game and even some overrides set to lower values for the V3 itself.
It has a heatsink fastened to the GPU by means of thermal sdhesive, this stuff won't come off, I've tried pulling on it before. What I was thinking of doing, since I only have 80/40/20 length/width/height in centimetres to play with, is get two 40mm wide x 15mm high square fans and using self tapping screws right through the aluminum heatsink. Only the outside ends of the fans can be screwed, but I figure some support running the length of both fans would make them act as one big one. Is this advisable and will it work nicely?

Here is a picture showing what I mean.

Here is a link to the fans I want to use.

I once had a voodoo3 too and when I was playing games for a few hours, I could burn my fingers on the heatsink but I just didnt care about that and the thing never stopped working.

All that cooling is a waste of effort.

I found something here Swilo that might help out a little,

Nice site tweaker, few comments though. My case is full tower, lots of space and nothing obstructing air flow by any noticable amount. Got 3 exhaust fans in back (2 came with and 1 p/s) and I'm gonna pick up 2 really strong ones for intake, hopefully I'll get some nice positive pressure inside the case. I only have 1 slot free next to the vid card because I have 5 slots and 4 cards, so a slot cooler would be a VERY tight fit, if it even does. The card coolers might work, there's a good 5m between the edge of the card and the case panel, but it would still be tight.

Still open to suggestions before I spend $$ on anything.

I found this site that has some info on cooling systems,

I can't get the heatsink off, I can't use that. This heatsink is literally glued on using who knwos what, I don't know how to disolve it (whatever could would probably go through the chip and board too) and I don't want to pull it off (this will damage the chip).

Hmm ever tihng about a slot cooler to fit right next to card? Only thing is it blocks a pci slot....

No offense, but I already thought about that and posted that it would be an extremely tight fit.

Swilo, as I said. It takes a freeze sometime. Some of the Voodoo 3's actually have a foil like substance that works somwhat as a thermal tape. It's hard as hell to get off. When I had to remove mine for thermal paste, I had to freeze it and yank, tug, and finally I hit it with a rubber mallet (GENTLY) on the end of the heatsink and it came lose. If it wasn't for freezing the thing.. I wouldn't of got it off.

And 486 fans. Nice little medium output fans that would be just perfect. People used to use a dual 486 fan combo for overclocking them.

Older Voodoo 3 chips we're actually 143mhz chips set to 166mhz. Newer ones we're 166's, on the V3 2000, they we're physically underclocked (I read this somewhere a long time ago...)

Try removing the heatsink and getting yourself setup with thermal paste. I removed that foil-like crap and applied cheapo's thermmal paste and I lost a crapload of heat. I could clock the thing to 183 when I took it off, and I couldn't even clock above 172mhz with the crap on. First, you have to get the heatsink off. That's probably one of the bigger causes. Now, also, you should get yourself some fans, you may get enough cooling to the heatsink to not have to remove the foil stuff.

As for mine, I have keeper clips for the heatsink, why don't you have them, I don't know. But I could of either gotten a PCI or AGP and they practically had the same heatsink setup, even with the two keeper pins...

Anyways, go out and search for some 486 fans. They supposedly fit just perfectly, and they do on mine.

And as I said. If I get a new video card sometime, I'll send you my heatsink off mine, but I'll reqiure you to send me your old one, so I can drill it under the drillpress at my friends house so I can remount the thing with thermal paste. But that's only as a last resort. If you can get the self tapping screws to work, there's a good idea. Remember though, make sure they don't go to far and poke the card, that would result in a big problem hehe.

Good Luck Swil,
AoD

Hmm! Not sure how to help you with this Swilo but I did find this interesting article,

http://www.hardocp.com/reviews/vidc...000_pci_pg2.htm

Not sure if it will do you any good though

Anyway check it out and see if something here can help you, good luck
