Video is Lagging on ALL Games
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hello,
My Problem:
When I start up a game (either a PC game , or an emulator) the game plays fine for about 5 minutes then it will just freeze up for about 20 seconds, in which the sound stops and the video goes into slow motion and I can't do anything, exit, use controls, nothing until its done lagging about 20 seconds or so later. This will continue to happen every 3 minutes or so. I've had this problem now for about 3 years. I have never found a way to fix my problem, nor has anyone helped me fix it. I've asked on numerous forums about my problem, everyone is boggled just like me.
Also my fan has been getting louder and louder, perhaps this has something to do with my problem. I'm not sure. Is it over heating, or what? Hmm...
What have I done:
I've tried running Spyware to remove any unwanted problems. This hasn't helped. I have defraged and downloaded the latest drivers, this hasn't helped. I have took off the side of my tower and cleaned out all the dust, around the fans and everything, still nothing. I'm not sure what else I can do.
How long I've had this problem:
Since about a year or so after I bought the machine.
PC Specs:
Name: Compaq Persario 5320 US
OS: Windows XP Home Edition
Ram: 512 mb
HD: 40 gb
HD Space Available: 28 gb
Drive1: 12x DVD-ROM
Drive2: 12x CD-RW
Any Suggestions?

Hi try running your rig with the case door open.
If this helps. Get a couple of suitable case fans. 1 intake in the front and one rear as exhaust. Also Check that fan that is noisy. If it is the CPU fan? Then replace it at once!
Try finding a fan that is 50 CFM and up for the cooler and 38 CFM and up for the case.
Good fans is Enermax, Sunon, Panaflo, YS Tech and Thermaltake.
If you want a good high CFM fan for the cooler and still quiet. I can recommend Thermaltake "Silent Cat" 90mm. 52 CFM. 21 DbA noise. It also fits 80mm coolers, as it got an adapter 90mm to 80mm.
You can also add a Antec "VCool" ( See picture). Slot Video card cooler. near the video card. It will use up 2 slot openings in the rear of the case.

Okay, I opened up the side panel of my Tower and tried that out for a bit, but the video is still choppy and in goes into that slow motion state. I noticed the fan in the middle of my tower (unsure on which one it is, black with a round fan in the middle of my tower inside screwed down) was feeling very hot. And I think this is the one that has been making most of the racket.
Any ideas on how much this would cost to replace? I'm running an old compaq machine. I just want it to run Half-Life. Those requirements are quite low. I think its my fan thats over heating and causing the game to freeze up every other minute or so. Any suggestions?
Hmm, I also forgot to mention I'm using a 16 MB nVidia Vanta Graphics card. This may be my problem, no?

That depending on what prosessor you use.
Download Everest Home http://www.snapfiles.com/get/everest.html And check out wich processor you got? And tell me.
That video card (I.e Integrated videochip) is very, very slow. I dont think there is not many of todays advanced games you can run at such a videocard.
And definitly not Half life, Doom3. Halo, Far Cry and Battlefield 2.
If you like that kind of games, Then you need at least a video card like HIS Hightech ICE98-2H-ZAM Radeon 9800PRO 128MB 256-bit DDR AGP 4X/8X Video Card - Retail. $136.00 newegg, webshop.
http://www.newegg.com/
But first, check out if you got an AGP Port for videocards?
Open Everest Home and look under "Motherboard" and "Expansion slots".
If It shows that you dont have a "AGP Port" then You Could get a PCI Video card (Not to confuse with PCI Express videocards) like Jaton FX 5700. 128 mb PCI Video card $97.00. this card will fit into any ordinary PCI lot on the motherboard.
But I doubt, that games like Half life will run at other than the lowest settings.
If I where you. If you now discover that your motherboard does'nt have AGP slot. I would consider a serious upgrade to PCi express AMD motherboard socket 939. A powersupply 430 W or more. AMD 64 3000+ socket 939 processor . DDR PC 2300 RAM memory . 1 gigabyte And Geforce 6600GT.128 mb PCI express videocard. And maybe a new harddrive 160 Gigabyte SATA. But of coarce you can use your old drives, HDD. CD / DVD drives.
This way you will have a rig, that meets the demands of todays games and is upgradeable for the future.
Here is suggestions for what you will need to upgrade:
Powersupply: ASPIRE ATX-AS520W BLACK ATX 520W Power Supply 115/230 V CB IEC 950/ TUV EN 60950/ UL 1950/ CSA 950 - Retail $54.00
Motherboard : MSI K8N Neo4-F Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail $82.99
Processor : AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice 1GHz FSB 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor - Retail $146.00
Thermal paste for the Processor : Arctic Silver Ceramique Thermal Compound $5.99
RAM : CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit System Memory - Retail $87.55
Video card: GIGABYTE GV-NX66T128D Geforce 6600GT 128MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail $159.00
I also discovered looking at your Presario. That it is a "Micro ATX " PC. So you will need a new case.
This for instance:
NZXT NEMESIS Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 400W Power Supply - Retal $80.00 (See picture)
All prices from newegg, webshop
Final word : As you can see, this case comes with a 400W powersupply. But I would replace it with the Aspire 520 W if I where you. As I think the included powersupply probaly is of less good quality. And the Powersupply is a very important part of a PC.
If you use a "Recovery CD" for your Windows XP. You will need a "Real" Windows CD.
Microsoft Windows XP HOME Edition With Service Pack 2 - OEM $91.95

Get this CPU cooler : ARCTIC COOLING Super Silent 4 UltraTC 90mm Cooling Fan/Heatsink - Retail $17.99
And some Thermal paste: Arctic Silver Ceramique Thermal Compound - OEM $5.99.
You can find the stuff here: http://www.newegg.com/
Then remove the old Processor cooler and clean the processor, with some Acetone and a lint free cloth.
Then apply a "paper thin" layer of this thermal paste on top of the Processor , using a razorblade.
Fit the new CPU cooler and connect the CPU fan to the fan connector on the motherboard. Finished! Do not forget to connect the fan! othervice you will toast the processor.
But before you do. Unplug the PC a couple of minutes before you open the case. Then before you start to go inside the PC. Grab the kitchen sink or a water tap, to remove yourself of statical electrisity. This is most important, as Statical electrisity, even in small amounts, can kill PC hardware!
When you have replaced the Processor cooler with this new one. You will find, that you have a much cooler Processor and a much more quiet PC.
And also seriously consider to get a new video card! You will manage well with this card . If you keep away from games like Doom3 and Battlefield 2 But Half Life wont be any problems, as long as you dont set the quality settings too high. SAPPHIRE RADEON 9600XT 256M Radeon 9600XT 256MB 128-bit DDR AGP 4X/8X Video Card - OEM $93.00. newegg.
Here is a picture of the cooler.
