CD-Rom

For the past month or so my computer does not recognize any cd's or dvds when put into cd-rom and dvd/cd writer drive. The CD-Rom button sometimes needs to be pushed a couple of times to open in the first place. I've run numerous virus scans and nothing else seems to be wrong with my computer. Does anyone know why my computer isn't recognizing cd's and dvd's?

Offhand I would say that your CDROM is broke, although possibilities also include bad cables or a bad PSU. Do you have a spare, even if its in another pc to test out on that cable and PSU?

Some system specs and age would help btw.

It's an hp pavilion desktop f1703 and I've had it for i think a yr and a half - to two years. I do have another computer that i could use its cables to test...but i'm not sure what a PSU is or what it looks like.

PSU = Powersupply.

A year and a half to two years, that is ample time for either the PSU or the CD drive to go bad.

Note I did not say just to swap cables, remove that drive from your pc and put it in another pc and test that drive. If it works fine, then you probably have a PSU problem in your original pc, if it still exhibits the erratic behavior it is dying. The open/close button is a sign...
