DVD Upgrade Problems

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I’m having problems installing new optical drives in my pc. I have an old Dell pc that came installed with CD-Rom and CD-RW drives, I bought two new drives to replace them a DVD-Rom and a DVD Burner. I replaced the CD drives with the DVD drives and connected them exactly the same but I’m having problems. When they are both connected I get the following message when I boot up

Secondary hard disk drive 0 not found
Secondary hard disk drive 1 not found
Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility

And the blue loading bar at the Win XP screen freezes for awhile then continues the boot up. When I get to my desktop neither drive works, it doesn’t show the drive icons in my computer and they aren’t listed in the device manager. Now if I unplug the second drive (the slave) then I still get the above message but the Win XP bar doesn’t freeze and the drive works. I’ve tried switching the drives around but it’s still the same. My computer uses cable-select drive cables and the drives I bought are here

and here

Could someone please tell me what I’m missing, are these drives not compatible? did I set them up wrong? I would really appreciate some help thanks.

Do you have the drives set up as cable select? Some systems have problems with that. If so, try with one as master and the other as slave and see what happens.

Ok I checked the drives and both had there jumpers set to slave so I changed them to CSEL and they work. Thanks for pointing that out. needless to say i've never installed disk drives before.

Cool. Glad you got it fixed. Sometimes it's the simple things.
