That annoying "cannot display page" message!

Hi and thanks for the welcome. Actually my problem is with internet connection but I am trying to eliminate hardware issues at this point in time. I have a D-Link (DI-624) router and cable modem (also D-link). These are about six months old. I have two comps. One Dell, XP Home (brand new) and an older AWARD (yes they do [or did] make computers, not just BIOS, LOL) XP Professional. Both with SP2. I keep getting that annoying error message that says "page cannot be displayed"/"cannot find server or dns error." (Bottom of the page says: res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm")
It doesn't seem to matter whether I am clicking on a link, typing the address into the browser address bar (IE6) or clicking on a link within a site. For example, it is entirely possible that when I click to submit this question I will get that error message. I searched and searched at Microsoft and all I got was a headache! Further, it doesn't seem to matter if I am using IE or Firefox.
Question (finally): Is there a way to test my router to make sure it is functioning properly? Cable modem is working well. Computers are updated and in excellent shape. (I did power-cycle both comps/modem=no success.)
Thanks.
(You will probably see me posting at the Internet problems forum after this!)
