Alright so this guy asked me to build an A7V400 and Sempron 2400 kit with 512mb of RAM
to change his little IBM APTIVA
I kept it because it had an AMD K6-2 333Mhz on it with this tiny little motherboard
it has only one PCI and an integrated ATI RAGE PRO 4MB
So I took out his two bars of 16, (32) and his old 6gb QUANTUM 5.25 BIGFOOT series hard drive and replaced them by
a maxtor 20gb 5400RPM and 192 of memory (64 + 128)
The computer is pretty 'fast' under windows 98, but something isn't right I mean I find loading times really slow for a 333 and such memory on such a light operating system, I entered the CONSERVATIVEFILESWAPUSAGE=1 in system.ini
I defragged the harddrive but I still get lag in games
like diablo 2, gta 2, little fighter
Small little games that ask for 233mhz 64 of ram which I outbeat, 200mhz and 32mb on GTA 2 which I also outbeat
Wheres the problem and why so much lag? Was an AMD K6-2 comparable to a PENTIUM 2 300 or 350? or are these series cheaper CPUs?
K6-2 has 3dNOW and MMX, I have 3 times more memory than I need for the games and almost 100 to 150 mhz over the requirements and I still get lag:S
Theres only one PCI slot and its occupied by a LAN card so I cant upgrade teh 3d card lol I thought this little tiny K6 could be useful for little gaming
Of course its gonna be fine for STARCRAFT when we have LAN tournaments, but I thought a K6-2 was gonna be a bit better than that!
Thanks

There is no such thing as a "light OS" when it comes to windows. Secondly, lag is not just a matter of processor speed. You shouldt see a good bump in performance if you throw that second hard drive back in and put the swapfile there. This is still a good tip for windows now btw. If you can increase the ram to 512 you might see some improvement as well.
If the system has USB, you can get a USB network adapter and use that slot for a graphics upgrade. There are also faster K6-2 chips with higher multipliers. This system would serve better as a low end server than as anything else however.
