Mounting a 120 mm fan on XP 90

Hi guys!

Just out of interest.

I read somewhere, that you can mount a 120mm fan on a Thermalright XP 90 by using the 90mm mounting springs. And set one of them in the upper mounting hole and one spring in the lower hole. I have tried that and it actually works. I tried with a Enermax 120 X 120X 25.
But I did'nt mount the actual cooler on the CPU.

But my question is this:

If you do that. The 120mm will stick outside the cooler. some mm.
And then some of the tip of the fan blades wont blow on the cooler itself.
Let's assume I mount a YS Tech, 120mm. 125 CFM ( 40 DbA) fan like that. Will I have it have a good cooling effect? Despite of the oversized fan. And do you think that the loss of CFM on the cooler will be big?

Anyone good at aerodynamics here?

well, I'm no expert or anything, but it seems to me that the most air is moved by the outside part of the fins, because that's the biggest part of the fan. so I would guess that the cfm would go down to at least 100, if not 75 or so. not to mention the bigger dead zone in the center...

you reduce your dead zone quite a bit, and increase cfm with one of those.

Well, I had my suspicions, about it would be like that. So I will order that YS Tech 120mm, and that fan converter /duct.

yeah, I will. But it whill take a while, before I get the YS Tech fan from U.K.
Here in Sweden it's hard to find the more extreme CFM fans. The fans that you often see here, is Papst and other "Breeze fans" lol.

My two cents...

Take a disc of radius 50 cm and rotate it. Using sensors, track the velocity at any given point along a radius. The velocity will start at 0 in the center and reach max at the outside of the disc.

Applying this to the fans, the question is, "Does the parts of the 120mm fan which are in the same size at the 90mm fan spin faster than the 90mm fan, and does the 120mm generating more heat come into play.

^^^i thought the disc would have the same velocity everywhere on it! Are you sure about that?

Goranpaa, you are really trying to perfect this o/cing you got going! lol, it must be a challenge!
Sorry I dont really know whether you will lose a lot of cfm or not, but that thing that Bix suggested looks like in can work.

the outside of any wheel like object or rotating surface spins faster than an inner part. It must or the object would be torn apart.

Draw a wheel with radial spokes.

Start one spoke at 0 and rotate to pi/2. take the arclength at the end of a spoke, 1/3 of the way down and 1/2 way down. from 0 to pi/2.

You will notice that the farther away from the vertex, the longer the arc length. Yet all points on the spoke arrive at pi/2 at the same time.

v=d/t

If t is the same, and d is different, the velocity must be different at each point where d is different.

That is true. The inner part will run faster.


Today, I wanted to test this setup. So I hooked up a Enermax 120mm 84 CFM. ( No fan converter though). On my XP 90 and fired up the PC.

CPU idle: 35 C
Load: 41 C

Case idle : 33
Load . 36

1 hour of Sandra Burn in test in 23 C room temp.

CPU: 46 C
Case : 38 C

Not bad hey?

And I guess, that I can shave off some more degrees, by using that fan converter Bix talked about.

You can explain it like this also.
Uniform Circular Motion

V= 2 Pi R / T

When R increases V should increase also! I learnt this in physics, but was never given the example of a spining wheel....

Nice job goranpaa...what cpu are you running? and how much have you oced it?

P4 Northwood 2.8 GHz 800FSB HT. @ 3.4 GHz.
This CPU, is good at keeping cool by it'self. But it seems, that this combo, XP 90 and 120mm Enermax, beats both XP 90 + 92 mm SUNON 53 CFM. And Vapochill Micro Extreme and the orginal 73 CFM fan.

Would have been really interesting to have any way to measure how big the CFM loss is on the 120mm Enermax ( 94.92CFM)? As it sticks out some mm over the edge of the XP 90.

I thought it might be easier for the casual reader to explain it in terms of basic linear motion. While the formulas for uniform circular motion are similar, the concepts are slightly different.

how far are you ocing goranpaa. It seems that you are constantly looking for more power and more cooling?

Do you read CPU? They did an article on phase change cooling a while back which achieved subzero temps and massive potential for ocing. Also they are now doing a series on quiet air based cooling.

Btw how do you get by with so little hd space. I have almost half a terabyte and I have almost filled it.

wow...I dont know how you could use that much space. I have a single 80 gig in both my machines and neither of them is over half full.

The average person needs no more than 75 gigs of space. I have 100 on my laptop and 60 on my desktop. That is more than enough for my needs. 1/2 terabyte would be extremely hard to fill, even if you download or copy movies to your HDD(only about 8 gigs/movie). There's not many things that require a huge HDD setup like that; a webserver could use that, or something on a corporate network, but not for the average (or not so average) gamer or PC user. So my question to you is, why do you need 1/2 TB of space and what do you fill it with?

I have the 36 gig Raptor for games only. The 72 gig Raptor for Windows and Sound editing, Photo edit programs etc. And then the 80 gig P ata for other apps.
Then I have an external 80 gig drive fore storing important stuff.
