ME stops at opening screen

I tried to install a Lexmark z710 printer. All attempts were unsuccessful and put an unknown device listing in the device manager's USB section. I deleted the unknown and uninstalled the printer software and started over. I kept getting an error message that it could not find, or was not connected to a port. It gave the option to choose the port manually from a list. I chose the USB 1 (only one available). The install completed and told me to restart the computer. That is when it got to the startup window screen and will not continue. I tried to start in safe mode and it does the same. I tried to get into setup while booting and got a screen that kept repeating "unable to upgrade 1% to 2%." I think the printer must need to be connected to a high speed USB and I connected it to a slow one. I do not know how to get back into the computer to undo the request I made. It is My neighbor's computer and I do not have access to any of the computer info to post here. . Her PC and OS (ME) is about 6 years old and has had no updates for anything. It is a very basic system with not much ram, hard drive or processor speed, has not been defragged in 6 years because of something running in the background. Also scandisk will not complete for the same reason. I shut down most of the running programs before I started the install and ran spybot and regcleaner. Virus protection also has not been updated for 6 years. Can someone please tell me what I need to do to tell the computer to quit trying to upgrade the uSB from 1 to 2. Or how to Uninstall the printer without being able to get into the regular programming. Her computer had lots of problems before I started but at least she could use it. HELP!

unplug the printer, and boot to a dos disk and run scandisk and defrag. then try safe mode again.

all usb 2 devices work with older protocols, that isnt the issue.

You also may have inadverntently answered the problem in your orignal post. However you get the system up and running again, make sure that you update everything, particularly the bios and usb drivers.
