WinXP Won't Let Me Display a Background!
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Windows just started to not let me show a background. I just set it to Classic Style, so that may have something to do with it, but whenever I choose an image for a background, it stays for a few seconds, then dissapears and shows the background color. I don't think anyone has any suggestions, but it's worth a try.

I tried switching to XP style, but it still doesn't work. Anyone have any ideas?

Are you running any AV and antispyware programs.

Just Norton Antivirus. I scanned for viruses with both Norton Antivirus and AdAware if you think there's spyware. Or, do you think it's causing the problem?

I am trying to narrow down the problem, I have noticed that most system glitches not attributable to hardware can almost always be dealt with by properly protecting your system from spyware, adware and viruses.
As a rule, I run Spybot, Spywareblaster, Adaware, MS Antispy and AVG antivirus with all memory resident options enabled. Anyway...
Have you run all appropriate systems maintenance programs, like a registry cleaner etc?
When did the problem start?

The problem just started about 2 days ago. I had had one background up for a long time, and when I tried to change it to another, it just stayed black, and it won't do any other images either. I havn't run registry cleaner. Should I? Where do I get it, or does windows have it?

I downloaded TweakNowRegCleaner and I scanned. It found a lot of problems. I deleted all the "Safe to Delete" ones, but there were 5 that it didn't know if they we're safe to delete. Here's what they are: deskpan.dll, a3d.dll, fde.dll,a3dapi.dll, and another a3d.dll. Does anyone know any of those? Are they safe to delete? I know I just uninstalled some programs and it said that some dll's weren't used by any program, but I left them there just incase. THose could be them.

I just checked about fde.dll and some sites said it assists a trojan. other's let you download it, but if it assists a trojan, why would you want to download it?

Not sure exactly what you mean by this last post but if you have something that assists a trojan, you may actually have a trojan.
I have been really down on NAV since 2003 came out. That is when I started using AVG and recommending it everywhere, you system at least back then gained a noticable performance boost.
To be honest, I tend to be gung ho with those not sure options, I generally pull the trigger. But then again I rarely get them.

Does anyone know where I can get free registry cleaner software? Everything's a trial version and won't fix it all. I have a ton of problems.

Try jv16. I think it runs in full mode for the trial period.
