"Stupid" looking for help with Win 3.1

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hay Helpful Ones O
"Stupid but learning" here. Getting to the point, I have an old Compac Pesario that I retrieved from the Garbage, it had been discarded by a small Med. clinic in my neighborhood. bringing it home I booted it up and it worked like a charm. for about 6 months I used it to wries in even though the floppy will not export and the fax won't transmit. so I had no way to to save o4 send any documents. I work lieing in bed, one night my dog fell asleep head on the key board and pressed "Enter" to the result that opon waking i found 2000 + pages with nothing on them. I deleted them but when I tried to save something I got "unable no room on drive" window. The waist bin is full of protected documents from the clinic and I had on several occasions tried to clear them out but was unable to figure out how. even though it is old, probably late 80s it is funcitional for my needs to write in and i have found that it has a news letter temp plate that is very easy to use. I am looking to do a small monthly news letter for "meals on wheels" the group that provides me a large portion of my food and i would like to do the news letter to help repay the kindness that they shown me.
So background done on to what I need to know.

1.....
How do I clear the hard drive?
2.....
How do i get either the Fax or floppy working?

1. use dos or format
2. no clue, given the age of the hardware and software
3. you are not permitted to use software that comes on computers you acquire in such a manner, the clinic owns the software. next time, format any such computer you get immediately and use your own software.

I didn't know that I wasn't allowed to use the software involved I guess that makes me a criminal, when I found the computer I did go to the clinic and asked them about it and they told me that it worked and i was welcome to it also asking was told they had deleted anything important that it held, which I was later to find incorrect with the waist bin holding hundreds of files, (Not that I'm interested in anything there). at the time this computer that I'm useing now was inop. and I needed something to write with. For me the only way I can write is with a computer for two reasons. One my hand writing is illegebal do to residual effects of dyslexia and beyond that without spellcheck even I would have a problem desifering what I inteded to say, so in a very real way the computer has opened doors for me that pryer to getting one I didn't even know existed.
The second problem I incounter with you're suggestion is I have no programs to reinstall and at this time wouldn't know how. You must remember "I'm stupid but seeking to learn". I'd like to take an internet coarse in repair for I have a dream of setting up a charity through which I'd take in donated older but operational computers from people upgrading and with a little reworking give them free to low income families with children for school or medically shutins so they can have an internet life. As I see it an idle mind leads to an idle body and the combanation leads to a grave.
I know that to bring this idea to life will take cash and I have none as I'm living on SSI and have AIDS.but the owner of my house is an Att. and he has promissed to help me in attempting to get a local, state or federal grant, also the charity that delivers my food "Care resources" is interested and will underwrite me so I'll be able to give Tax relief to donators leading to the possibility of contacting corporation.
So as with Martin Luther Kings statement "I have a dream", I hope to bring my dream to life so when I pass something of the good in me will live on.
Sorry if I've bored you but as an "Overly Intelligent under achiever" i wanted you to understand who I am and what motivates me and with this knowledge you may be more willing to reach out and help for i need all the goodwill and help I can get. I am new here and as such a "Stranger in a Strange Land" (was that Ray Bradbury?) and feel a little uncomfortable for I don't know right from wrong as to protocol and i may be wrong but in a land of letters protocol (I think) can be important and please inform me if I'm wrong. at this time I have only one aquantance (Goranpaa) and he has been invaluable in leading to solutions to several problems and I sincerely thank him but by his own admittion he doesn't know it all and though I'll never know it all I need to know much much more so any help and adfvice you can give will be greatly appreichated.

P.S.
As you can see even spell check gets confused,

stop at the command prompt before booting into window

***If windows is starting automatically you will have to exit windows without shutting

down. This will put you at the command prompt c:\>

enter "cd recycle bin" without quotations

enter "deltree *.*" without quotations

restart computer

Recycle Bin should be empty.

Didn't work
I tried 5 or 6 times in different ways
1st time as you wrote it
(cd recycle bin) press enter
computer replied
(too many parameters - bin)
went ahead and entered
(deltree) press enter
computer replyed
(required paremeters missing)
no reason to list them all, it just simply went no where.

Try "cd recycl~1", or type "dir" to see a list of directories.

Ha! Had to reread my 3.1 manuals.

BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THE DELTREE COMMAND. iT CAN REMOVE COMPLETE DIRECTORIES AND FILES ARE IRRETRIEVABLE.

1/ Navigate to the directory where all the deleted med files reside.

2/ Select 1st file "shift & last file" (I think that worked in 3.1--really fuzzy) all files should be highlighted.

3/ Right click "properties" and remove all check marks for "hidden & system"

4/ Try deleting the files. If that doesn't work we'll go to step 5.

5/ Make note of the directory name where the files are located.

6/ exit windows

7/ Make sure that deltree.exe is on your "c" drive or in the dos directory.

8. As suggested - at the command prompt enter dir/w and look for your directory name you noted in windows (it may have a ~ name). At this point you can try removing the directory deltree (directory name).

9/ Enter cd (name of directory as shown in dos) enter dir/w to show the files.

10/ enter deltree *.* iF THIS DOES NOT WORK GO TO #11

11/ Stay in directory and type attribute -s -h *.* and try deltree command again.
Enter dir/w to confirm deletion.

Sorry if some of this is mind numbing "I'm out of practice"

I haven't had a chance to try you're suggestion yet, but I'm looking forward to the attempt with "great expectations" (Now who wrote that one) and hope.
I find it gratifing that someone would go to the extent of researching " had to reread 3.1 manual" to help a stranger with a problem and there are few people stranger than me (HA,HA,HA.) As A knight I figure you'd be sitting at the head of the round table in you're shining armor. "at the head of a round table" no theres a problem in logistics. It goes without saying that I'll let you know how it goes no matter success or failure.

Rocky Mountain alis "Stupid" here. I've been through it sense I was here last. I live in Miami Fla. and Katrina visited here first and I've been off the net without Power for about 8 or 10 days and haven't been able to get on the net till tonight (9/7). I'll be trying you're suggestion as soon as I can, I hope you haven't disappeared thinking I was ungrateful or truly ("Stupid").
At this time I have limited access to net time so it may be a few days before I return with an answer to you're suggestion. I hope you understand and don't abandon me. You sound like someone who can be very helpful to a computer dope like me. Let me know if you're still there for I do find it gratifing that you would go back to the books to try and help. Thanks GUY.
