HDD died

My hard drive seemed to be going bad as of recent, so I backed it up on DVDs using Nero BackItUp. The HDD was a 80Gig (WD I think) 3200rpm.
Sure enough, I went out of town and when I returned the drive was ka-put. It would make a clicking noise on startup and WinXP would never boot up, just the BIOS. I went to Best Buy yesterday and got a WD 160Gig 7200rpm HDD ($40 after $80 in mail-in rebates).
My question is, since I have the backup, should I just do a full restore (and if so, how do I do that?)
Or, should I get a "fresh start" and install WinXP and its updates from scratch so there won't be any inherent bugs or quirks transferred from the old HDD? If this is the best choice, how do I "pick and choose" the files I need from the backup DVDs to transfer to the new HDD? like My Docs and other files I need to retain.

Obviously, I've never done this and don't know the how's or best practices for restoring a backup or partial backup.
Thanks a ton,

a fresh install is the preferred method. reinstall all programs and update them, including windows. then browse the cd and pull any files you require.
