Drives missing on XP

I am running XP on an old AMD 600 desktop. I was experiencing OS slowdowns and space problems, and planned to format and reinstall.
I have two Maxtor 14GB and 42GB, and one Seagate 120GB drives. I run the third drive (the 120GB) from a Promise Ultra 100TX2 controller card; release: 2.20.0.15. The 14GB is partitioned as C & D to dual boot Win98 and XP. The 42GB and 120GB are E & F, and used as storage and backup. I added a Seagate 250GB to backup all the needed data from the other drives while formatting the older drives, and to add space. The 250GB was connected to the Promise controller card cable in the slave position. All drives are set to Cable Select.
After installation of the 250GB drive (labelled G), Disk Management and Win Explorer showed the 250GB as 127GB. This was not fixed by Seagate’s DiskWizard or re-initializing with Disk Management. I have an AMI BIOS version: 08/02/2000. The BIOS boot screen showed the Promise controller detection sequence as “Secondary Slave Drive - ATAPI Incompatible / Press F1 to Resume”. All other drives ran as before.
I rearranged the drives so the 42GB drive was in the slave position on the Promise controller card, and the 250GB as slave with the Primary drive. The 250GB was recognized as 232GB, but the 120GB drive was missing. It was not in Device Manager and did not appear with Seagate’s DiskWizard. The BIOS recognized the 250GB as 232GB, but the BIOS boot screen listed the four drive positions on the two channel Promise controller card – “1)NOT DETECTED 2)[Maxtor 42GB] 3)NOT DETECTED 4)NOT DETECTED”. In other words, the BIOS recognized the 14GB and 250GB drives, as well as the 42GB on the controller card. All drives were properly connected, powered, warm and humming. I was able to move the wanted files from drives C D & E to backup on the 250GB.
I activated Microsoft Window Update (desperation move!) and after a relatively long update and reboot, found I had lost both the 120GB drive F, and 42GB drive E. The BIOS setup auto-detected the 14GB and 250GB drives as 13663Mb & 137.4GB respectively (Windows Explorer still showed the 250GB as 232GB). The BIOS boot screen now showed the controller detection sequence as “1)NOT DETECTED 2) NOT DETECTED 3)NOT DETECTED 4)NOT DETECTED” and “Sec Slave Drive - ATAPI Incompatible / Press F1 to Resume”. Device Manager listed only the 12GB and 250GB drives, and the Promise controller card was listed as operating normally.
I was hoping to copy the files I wanted to keep from all the other drives to the 250GB and then wipe all the old drives and set them up again with the 250GB as the fifth logical drive. But … something is goin’ on and you don’t know what it is …
I can imagine so many possible problems, I need help ASAP!!!

Since you have an old pc, my first question is, what rating PSU do you have. Also is a more recent bios available?
