how do i work battle.net

So i just installed diablo 2 and i cant figure out how to connect to battle.net
I thought all i had to do was click on the battle.net button at the main menu of the game, but when i do that, it just says " checking versions " and thats it. what am i not doing??

Just try again, sometimes it just gets stuck there.
Note that if you have any hacks/cracks/cheats/mods installed, you will not be able to play on Battle.net.

or you should try downloading the latest patch at blizzard. com
