Who owns the internet anyway?! I mean, everyone pays for bandwidth but who's the top dog? It seems like everyone pays up the chain but who's the lucky bastard at the top?

*pulls out her TCP/IP netadmin manual and flips to the "history" section*

Nobody straight-up owns the Internet. The government laid the groundwork for the concept starting back in the 60s with the ARPAnet (Advanced Research Projects Agency) for the Department of Defense. And yes, Al Gore was involved.

*15 years of ARPAnet, SATNET, and MILNET development skipped here*

In 1985, the National Science Foundation took over the Internet concept and laid down T1 lines for the first backbone. ARPAnet was phased out. AT&T, Network Solutions Inc., and General Atomics were all involved. After the backbone switched over to Asynchronous Transfer Mode tecnhnology, the backbone was privatized on April 30, 1996. The National Science Foundation contracted four companies to take over providing internet access. Since then, other companies have become providers as well, including MCI, AT&T, Sprint, etc.

Basically, "who owns the Internet" can be answered by "who ultimately provides your internet service?" Whoever owns the major portion of the backbone and network equipment in your area effectively "owns" the Internet in your area. Concepts and information found on the Internet are (in most cases) intellectual property of the people who create the sites.

Or you could just look at it this way:

Time-Warner/AOL now owns just about every form of media-related communication in the US.

'Nuff said.

Thus the internet is EVIL!

Though I'm surprised no one has trademarked 'internet' yet. But I suppose it's a real word in a dictionary now, and can't be trademarked.

Internet - An interconnected system of networks that connects computers around the world via the TCP/IP protocol. (Dictionary.com)

The word "Phat" is also in the dictionary now. It means "excellent".

yep Phat is in there....pretty wierd. There are also other new "slang" words in there too.
