Data Recovery off a Laptop hard drive.

Hi all.

My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1150, 2.8 GHz P4, 512 RAM, and what used to be an 80 Gig hard drive. Yesterday the computer gave me a STOP c0000218 error, implying that the registry was corrupt. Upon running diagnostics, turns out the hard drive had a few blocks that had missing addresses or unrecoverable data errors. I contacted tech support, and they're sending me another hard drive, totally empty. My question is whether I can recover data from the broken hard drive without going to the specialists. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

yep. If you have heard of linux and have used it, use Knoppix to recover the data

or you could try a windows xp live cd (that means that it runs xp from a cd rather than having to install it to the hard drive.

if your looking for a different approach, then you could install xp on the blank hdd, then try and recover the data. This method may be more dangerous as i do not know if xp will do anything to the other hdd.

I reccomend you get knoppix, and an external hdd 80 gb, then boot w/ knoppix and copy all files from \\hda1 to \\hda2 then put a FRESh copy of windoz on a new laptop internal hdd and copy all your files back. reinstal programs, unless you lost all your keygens this should work, its always best to start anew on win xp especially if your regestry is corrupt.

if this dont work then get an adapter for your laptop hdd and toss it in a desktop comp and do a 1:1 copy to another hdd with a program, I like copy commander, but theres some free bees out there that should work too

Allright, I decided to go this way:

I obtained a new hard drive, and installed it. My laptop is functioning fine, so its out of the game. Now I am trying to get the data off the busted hard drive. I got a 40 pin to 44 pin adapter, hooked it up into my desktop and tried booting the system normally. I must say that I set the native hard drive to master, but did not set the busted laptop hard drive to anything, since I couldn't find any jumpers small enough to fit it. During the boot, my desktop gives me a "Bad PBR" statement. I am assuming that it is trying to load windows from the busted hard, which gives me the problem. If this is the case, how can I load windows from the regular, working hard drive? (Note: the 2 drives are connected in the same ATA cable).

and if not, can anyone offer any other suggestions?

We've rigged up a jumper and set the laptop hard drive as a slave. Windows now loads normally from the native HDD, but... I cannot see the laptop hard drive in My Computer. Therefore, still no access. Could appreciate some help.

is it listed in the bios at all?

No, its not listed in the bios.

I am trying to create a Win XP live cd using Bart PE. I am running Win XP Pro SP2. Question: what directory should I input, when it asks for the path to Windows installation files? Do I input the whole c:/windows directory, or do I input a directory within the windows folder?

Success! I set the desktop drive to master, and the laptop drive, which I connected to the desktop using an adapter to slave. Using the program that goranpaa recommended, I am salvaging the data. Of course, some objects are lost, but for the most part, I retrieved everything I needed.

Thanks all for the help.
