Internet Connection problems

Ok, there's more than that, but that's the biggest issue.
Almost every single night, I'll get a little tooltip bubble popping up in the taskbar saying "A network cable is unplugged.", twice in a row, and then everything will go back to normal. Most of the time this disconnects me from AIM, but that isn't really the main issue.
I've just got World of Warcraft, and I don't want this connection problem popping up while I'm in the middle of playing.
I recently got a new PC, and prior to that the "Network cable is unplugged." message only popped up every so often, but with this new computer it's happening like clockwork almost. I was wondering if it may be because my ethernet is on-board on this computer, whereas on the previous computer it was a PCI card.
Does anyone know what might be causing this, and how to fix it?
Also, this is partly related, my internet connection seems to be slowing down lately. If I'm downloading on Limewire of BitTorrent, then I usually can't browse the internet at all until I stop using the P2P programs. I was wondering if it may again be down to the on-board ethernet, or perhaps it's my router, which isn't exactly a fantastic model (ST Labs IPR-4P, apparently it's not very good). Or perhaps my ISP is trying to limit my internet usage, I really don't know. Any ideas?
And finally, this has been an issue since I started using Windows XP actually; with Windows 98, I was able to share files with the other two computers on my home network with no problems, but with Windows XP I'm just unable to do so for some reason. I've tried following the Network Setup Wizard, with the options for Sharing enabled and everything. The network itself doesn't even show up in the Network Neighbourhood, or whatever it's called in XP. Again, would anyone know what I could do to fix this?
PC Specs:
Processor: AMD Sempron 1.75gHz
Graphics: ATI 2250 SE 128MB
RAM: 256MB
Router: ST Lab IPR-4P Broadband Router
Firewall: ZoneAlarm
Anything else you want to know, just ask.

the key to this one is that you had the same problem on two completel seperate computers to varying amounts. unless you're really unlucky with your network cards it means that it is not down to your computer or any of the hardware in it.
do you use a router or the like?? The one experience I had similar to this was with my first adsl router which when forced to do lots would freak out for a second or two giving the 'network cable unplugged message'. P2P programs would totally cripple such a connection.
In my case it was because the hardware was designed badly, I dont think anyone had expected broadband in the uk to reach 2/4/8mb as fast as it did and the router simply couldnt handle it.
dont know whether tha will help you in your investigation at all!

Try locking the speed of your card to 10 Full duplex. If you have a router on your network then lower the MTU to 1452 or 1428.
