I know, it's a useless idea, but it's something to tinker with. But I've ran into a problem.

I only have my quantum to use as an HDD for it and the thing is detected during/after post but the system seems to lock after it's detected.

I've got an UMC PT-606e designed by PINE technologies, HDD controller. It's an upgradable one, right now it is an IDE but I can upgrade it to an EIDE card if I felt like doing a bit of soldering and a simply jumper change.

Now, I'm using a 8.4gb drive, and I've got two partitions at 3.7gb a piece. It locks while detecting it. I've manually entered the HDD specs and used the USER #47 ID for the BIOS and still no help. I've enabled the LBA mode and also the 32-bit transfer modes under the bios, still to no avail.

Other things, there is a selection for IDE Block Mode, they are, Auto 2 4 6 and 8. What do these do and what could they affect in my endeavour?

Well thanks in advance,
AoD

I would say you're out of luck. A updated BIOS for the IDE controller might help, but i'm guessing even that is too old to support that large of a hard drive.

Well, the things I've read on the controller says it supports LBA type drives. The BIOS also supports it, other than that, I have not a clue.

You might try checking the settings on the hard drive. I know WD hard drives need to have the default setting on if they're on a channel all by themselves. You also might try cable select if the master setting isn't working.

Try making those partitions smaller than 2 gigs yet? I know there's an OS limit from back then.

Well, I'm simply running a windows 98 dos shell, nothing more but it is FAT32 so, the partitions are ok, least they should be. As for the drive, it's setup as a master, and it has no special settings for being a single disk. I can get her to boot to a floppy version of 98's dos shell so I'm pretty sure the controller is ok.

It's got Award BIOS, I don't know what version, I haven't really looked (Yeah my stupidity hehe). And it's an all ISA board, 4 16 bit ISA, and 2 32-bit extended ISA. As for anything else I need to know, I don't know yet, I can find out, but I'm being rather lazy on the whole idea.

Ok, here is the HDD controller just to give an idea of what it is.
PT-606e

She is old, and she was designed by Pine Technologies. I can't get it to work. Locks up after detection prior to POST. I've used User settings and the BIOS can autodetect it, but when it detects the drive on the HDD channels, it locks. It's only an IDE controller, not yet upgraded to EIDE. I can't find the problem at all... Anymore help would be greatly appreciated..

Have you tried lowering the Pio mode level?

Posted by: The-AoD

Well it's set to auto I do believe Ion. I don't think I can switch that either, I haven't found it. I know this drive is PIO / ATA compatible...
