Erratic text size view - some huge!

I USE
Windows XP
on a HP Pavillion 510n
with 512 RAM
and a GEM LCD panel 17” monitor

The viewing size of the text on my monitor varies greatly. On some web site, the text is so big that I can only see a few letters on the screen at a time. Other site’s text is just fine, normal, readable size -- without me making any changes.

I have tried changing all settings under Control Panel, “Display”, under appearance and settings tabs. No matter what I change, the problem continues. I have adjusted the font size in the view menu of MS Internet Explorer – But on the smallest font setting, some sites (like Microsoft Office), still display text that is WAY too big on my screen.

NOTES: (1) I just accessed the Window XP help menu and that text was too big on my monitor. (2) In Outlook Express, when composing or receiving mail, the text view is inconsistent with the font size selected – and for some reason I cannot see colored text at all (when I paste the text into Word, it is sometimes colored). (3) The text size on my monitor for this Open Tech Support page and related pages has been just fine.

Any ideas ?
