SBC Yahoo DSL - No DSL Connection

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Sledge

I just got my sbc yahoo dsl modem and installation cd the other day (for my pc w/ xp) and so far, have not been able to get online. The cd won't finish loading unless a connection is detected and I'm not sure what settings, if any, need to be changed to allow a connection. Typing the address from the bottom of the modem (192.168.0.1) connects to a page where some changes can be made and you should be able to type in a standard login name & password but still no dsl connection is present. The ethernet light stays on steady but the internet light alternates between green and red flashes. The activity light blinks once in a while and checking the LAN connection shows that it is conected at 100mbps- there are a lot of packets being sent and received (in the past 6 hrs there have been 12k sent and 4k rec'vd). Any help would be greatly appreciated - before I give up and get a new dial-up service.

I tried to call SBC Help and got different answers whether my service was active or not and then I went online for help. Here's the text from the conversation:

Allien Crook: Thank you for using SBC Yahoo! Chat Support. You will now be disconnected from the session. The chat window will remain open until you close it. For quick answers, make the new SBC Yahoo! Help site your first stop. Visit http://help.sbcglobal.net where you'll find pages of product information to assist you.

Me: no

Allien Crook: Is there anything else I can assist you with?

Me: thanks for your help- i will be canceling my services tomorrow morning - if i were you, i would find a new employer- have a nice day

Allien Crook: I assure you that your problem will be resolved very soon. Please contact our voice support and you can ask for a managerial support.

Me: i know that you are limited, however, i am done with this nonsense- i was warned that sbc dsl was inferior but i thought that maybe the problems had been resolved

Allien Crook: I understand your situation and the inconvenience you experienced.

Me: i'm not calling anyone on the telephone anymore because obviously the telephone support has been outsourced to India and I will not try to communicate with anyone else who can;t speak correct english

Allien Crook: I regret to say that I do not have enough expertise and tools to assist you effectively. Hope you understand my limitations.

Me: unless the dsl is working within the next 10 minutes- I plan to cease all affiliation with sbc yahoo and anyone else who has anything to do with this service

Allien Crook: I am in SBC Yahoo! Dial technical support. To obtain comprehensive and more accurate information on the same issue, please call one of our DSL support specialist at 1-877-SBC-DSL5.

Me: what needs to be done right now so that my dsl can be used?

Allien Crook: Okay.

Me: I'm typing this on dial up but the dial up services are inadequate and so far- so is the dsl support

Me: ok

Allien Crook: Me, currently your services with us do not show you as our DSL member. However, you can use the dial-up Internet services.

Allien Crook: Please allow me a moment so that I can check your account status and the details for your issue.

Me: I already have and I've been given different answers as to the status- can you tell me if my account is active or not?

Allien Crook: I understand that you wish to subscribe for DSL connection. Right?

Me: sorry- the case number is 105XXXXXX

Me: Hi- I'm having trouble getting a dsl connection- I called a few times already (case number 105863) but so far I still can't get anything.

Allien Crook: Hi . How can I assist you?

use a multi meter and check the current of your phone line . It should be about 45 volts dc or better. do you hear static on your phone line????????? that could be caused be a short or bad ground that could be your prob..... also I have heard that you do have to have one of there filters before your dsl modem......... good luck......

Be aware that if you have multiple phone numbers in your home, you need to plug the dsl modem in the correct phone number line. Second, a filter needs to be at all jacks wherein something is plugged in.

Once properly connected, the modem without need for any password should talk to the network. The status lights should be green and steady. Once this occurs, your dsl software should notice the connection upon install.

You can also check for line voltage as rusty90210 mentions above.

Thanks- I have a filter in line (one that came with the install kit) and there is no static on the telephone- except when the dial-up modem is establishing a connection, then it sounds a little rough. This dsl modem is not listed anywhere as far as hardware or modems- the only thing that shows up is the Intel ProSet desktop connection and that is working properly.

I checked with the multimeter and there is around 50 volts dc- I tried reseting the modem (speed stream 4100) a couple times. Do you think I should run a new line from the service tie-in to the line for the modem? I heard something about a beefier line giving a stronger signal.

Clarification (dumbass me!) no filter should be installed wherein the modem is plugged in to the phone system. Think 1 filter to one device other than the dsl modem.

Also do you have more than one phone number in your house? If so make sure that the phone number listed for the connection is the same as the one for the line you are plugging into. The telephone/dsl network is waiting at that address (rough analogy here) for your particulat modem to connect to the network and say "I'm here, I'm here!"

This connection should occur between modem and network without any pc or router install.

The modem is plugged into a splitter/filter supplied by SBC- one plug into jack, phone line plugs in to one side and dsl modem to other (designated outlets on filter)- I have only one telephone line / number in the house. I did have to use and extension phone cord (phone cord with coupler to join a second cord (or in my case, the filter) I do have some interesting phone wiring here, though. The different phone lines meet up in the basement where they are twisted together- but as I said earlier, I have good voltage and no static on the telephone (just the internal dial-up modem). One of the filters (the first one I used, of course) had the internal connections crossed. I found this when I checked for voltage and swapped out to a new filter. I was tinking that maybe I would take the modem to a different area and plug it in just to see if I get a good light- any ideas?

maybe take out to the service box and plug it into the test jack?

Ok, I just reread the thread and have a few questions

Is there a router involved in all of this? Or is the modem a modem router combo. Please list make and model of equipment involved.

remove all devices other than the modem from the phone line, anywhere on the property. also remove all the filters (youre not using a splitter) that are there. plug the modem directly into the wall, and into your comp and try to connect.

Thanks- I'm going to run a new cat5 from the service panel to this connection and see what happens. There is some noise on the line now and with my wiring incomplete (from construction), I'll give this a try. There is no router to my knowledge- just the speed stream 4100 modem and the ethernet cable to the pc. My phones are motorola 2.4ghz with the base plugged in near the pc and 3 add'l handsets plugged in only to power outlets- I already tried disconnecting that phone and on the only other phone (cordless) in another room- no changes. Thanks again- I'll post what my outcome is.

Thanks for all of the input- I ran that new line (about 75 feet +/-) and the connection is good. Now I'll look into getting rid of some of the sbc crap that got installed. SEEEEEEEEE YAA!

For what it's worth- I had trouble opening multiple browser windows after installing this software. I checked around (posts from Shalome were real helpful) and finally uninstalled the sbc yahoo software bundle. This still didn't fix things so I played with some of the advanced settings under internet options from the internet explorer tools and now things are back to normal- well, the way they were anyway! My spped seems to be right at 100mbps- I think that's good especially since I was at 49.2 kbps with dial-up.

Posted by: thtadthtshldntb

That 100 mbps is the speed with which your computer communicates, at max, to the modem. In reality it is far slower.
