viewing video files from PC on the TV

ok,so i finally connected my video card to the tv with the normal video out cable and can see whats on my PC in the TV monitor perfectly fine.

problem is when playing any kind of video files(mostly avi, wmv)

when i play any of those files it plays for like 1~2 seconds than goes pitch black.

maybe it has to do with the PC monitor to TV ratio as TV is more rectangular it seems.

how do i get my video card to put the more rectangular TV ratio so i can view my movies?

specs:
ATI Radeon 9200 128mb
AMD Athlon 750 mhz
128 RAM
windows 98
direct x9

Hm, do you put the TV as the primary display? On my nvidia fx 5200 i have to (Not used to Radeon Cards) About the 16:9 video ratio aspect, i dont know what you want =/.

i just want too see my video files on my TV instead of the big black square that appears in its place.

i used to video the videos perfectly fine before but now i cant.

im sure many people in modern countrys have PCs with TV out that enables them to watch all the cool movies, videos, animes they have on their comp on the TV
