Cable Modem Problems...

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hey everyone, this is my first post, nice to join the community. Anyway, I just recently moved into a new apartment and got Brighthouse Roadrunner cable installed. The motorola cable modem is connected to my computer through a Linksys wireless B router (I have a hardline going from the router to my computer). It works fine when loading webpages and such but I keep getting problems when I download anything. The download will start fine (usually at between 200-500 kps) however, eventually the download progress meter will freeze and the download will timeout. I also have problems with AIM in which I will either lose connection out right, or it will appear that I am still online but I become unable to recieve messages from people. I tried connecting directly to the cable modem without the router but the download problem still persists. If anyone has any idea what this could be I would greatly appriciate the help, I am unable to download anything larger than a few megs without it freezing up on me.
Thanks for the help,
Eric

have you tried power cycling the modem/ router? when i loose power or it flickers, i have to do this. simply unplug the power cable from the modem for 30 seconds and plug it back in and let it set itself up again. i usually have to do the modem first then the router.

Thanks for the response, but I have tried unplugging the modem and restarting. I have to do this every once in a while anyway, but when I have to do that I lose connection completely. The downloading difficutly occurs when my connection is fine and I'm able to access websites.

does this only happen with very large downloads? if so, possibly a RAM issue? what are your computers specs? ie. ram brand, motherboard brand/model, as much detail as you can find. to find this, download sisandra, which will tell you everything you need to know. i dont know the address for it, so a quick google should point you right to it.

Ok, check the coaxial cables. Look at the connector. The inner metal wire should protrude (I wonder if I spelt that correctly?) from an 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch from the end of the connector itself. This is often a cause of connectivity issues in cases you describe. I had a similar issue and this solved it permantly.

It occurs with any size download, but at random times. Meaning I will try to download a game demo for instance and one time the download will time out (stating the server was reset) at like 5 mb and then if i try it again it might make it to 10 mb before timeing out. When I connect directly to the cable modem the problem doesn't occur, it's only when I am connected through my linksys wireless B router. Any ideas?

well, its obviously a router issue then. have you rebooted the router as well?
