Hardrive no good or ?

I am new here so firstly hello to everyone,
I have an older pc that i am trying to get to work to use as a spare one.
The hardrive does not show up in BIOS startup, but strange enough though it showed up yesterday after i exchanged the grey cable, so i continued to load windows and everything went well, but today i went to kick it over and it went back to showing no hardrive in BIOS again.
Does this sound typical of a faulty hardrive ? i have had the motherboard checked and its ok, i haven't a spare hardrive to try out.
I just want to be a bit more sure before i replace the hardrive which isn't very old either.
any thoughts ?

update
I am getting no were fast and just about ready to chuck it to the .....house
and just to make it a more of a pain, now its decided not to startup at all, i changed the power box, still won't start, everything is connected up right.
I took the hardrive out and put into my newer pc as a slave, it showed up no probems.
any thoughts besides taking a sledge hammer to it. ?

Sounds to me like your mobo has a problem. What are the symptoms of it not starting? Is ANY power going to the machine? With what you've said so far, it could be anything from a bad mobo to crappy wiring to a bad power button (I've seen it before).

Thanks for taking the time to reply Rayvix,
Seeing that the hardrive works in my newer pc, it does look like the mobo. seeing that no lights are happening at all on the pc, now.
A thought just come to me, i will take off the wiring for the start button and cross a screwdriver across the contacts, at least it will eliminate the start button if it starts.

Well, that's an interesting approach, but I can tell you that it's PROBABLY your mobo. Triple check the power-switch wires going to the mobo, and if it's still not working, you've almost gurranteedly got a bad mobo. The other option would be to replace the PS, but since you've already done that...

Well its not the power switch, and i don't believe it to be the power supply after changing it with no result, and the hardrive shows up in another working pc ok, so it has to be the mobo or the cpu, i know the cpu's don't normally go bad but it may be a possibility.

The odds of it being the CPU are very small. How old are the various components?

Yes i know, but at this stage i don't think i can rule it out fore sure, the cpu is about 6 years old, the mobo is old, i brought it second hand, its one of those ones that the memory spins like mad when you start it up.
So there is only one way to find out, replace either and see how it goes, i don't have any spare m/boards or cpu's so it may take some time before i am able to test them out.
Thanks for your interest, its very much appreciated.

Well, you're probably going to have to replace them both anyways. Depending on what you have, you may not be able to find a new mobo that is compatible with your older processor, and vice-versa. Well, good luck!

The trouble with old systems is that getting spares for them is often more expensive than getting a new MOBO, CPU and memory and even if you do manage to find the spare you need you're still stuck with an old system.

Thanks chainlink for your advise,
But its only going to be used as a spare if anything goes on my new one, and i am happy to say i have it up and running, you wouldn't believe what it was, it was the primary ide cable that was causing all the trouble.
I had already replaced one ide cable but seems that one was no good as well, as soon as i put a new one in, it worked.
So thanks for your help,
Tank
