Slow loading DVD drive

For the past couple of years, I've been using a Shuttle system that my brother pieced together for me. Generally, the system (which runs on Windows XP) hasn't had many problems, but there's one big irritant I'd like to get rid of. Whenever I attempt to load a game that requires me to leave the disc in the DVD drive, the game takes a really long time to load.

The two games I play the most are The Sims 2 and Civilization 3. Each of these games takes upward of 20 minutes to load. Once loaded, they run smoothly and quickly (especially Civilization 3). Therefore, I don't think the cause of my problem is the processor speed. Most programs that run off the hard drive are as quick as I'd like them to be.

I don't know much about the DVD drive itself. The outside is labeled DVD-Rom, Combo 48X.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

sounds like you chose a minimum install for them. do a full install of the games, so they load and run almost entirely off the hard drive. full install will take a lot of space however.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the programs a couple of times (with full install), but the problem hasn't gone away. It also seems strange that it takes so long to load the programs initially, but once they're loaded they run fine (and quickly).

Any other ideas?

you could try, for troubleshooting purposes, to rip and mount an iso of the cd, then mount it in daemon tools or the like, and see if it is a cdrom issue or just a slow loading game in general.
