windows update

My husband can not get windows update to open on his computer. He uninstalled all the antivirus, spy ware firewalls , etc. He had to reinstall win2K because his system crashed. We installed a new motherboard with all its necessary files, reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled win 2k. He can access any other web site and even gets on Microsoft. He can download manually from Microsoft but we want to do the auto updates because when we did the manual's it crashed the system and we had to reformat and start all over. I have searched the internet for help and can't find it anywhere. Even contacted Microsoft who gave me a blanket reply that they would be in contact in 24 hours. Still waiting - they didn't say which 24 hours (yesterdays, todays, next week or next year). As you can see I am a bit frustrated. We have worked on this every day - all day -for a week. After reformatting and reinstalling several times we still can not get windows update to open. it just sits there with a sliver of the working line. When I check Task Manager it says it is not responding. Anyone got any good ideas?

granny 35658 ,

Windows 2000? Well, as your version of windows gets older and older you will find that Windows update will work worse and worse, it's Microsoft's way of forcing you to update to windows. I used to be able to get all the drivers for my old emachines computer right off windows updates, not it doesn't find anything but an Internet Explorer patch.

Eiter way, doesn;t really help as much as I'm just complaining....

if its doing this on a clean install, download a free firewall and place the install file on some portable media, or a second hard drive. do the same with the latest motherboard drivers, chipset drivers, and anything else along those lines. then format and install 2k again, and immediately put on the firewall (and other stuff you need) and reboot. then connect to the internet and try the update. if that fails, youll probably have to invest in xp.

One thing I have noticed is that the windows update activex scanner that MS trys to update periodically, you will see a message telling you something like "you do not have the most recent version of windows update" or something to that extent, does not always succeed in updating. This makes accessing the latest windows update site ( I think it is v6 now) problematic.

When I first had this problem, I manually changed the website address part that said v5 back to v4. It accessed the older web page and worked to install the active x component. Thereafter everything was ok on that pc.
