My computer will not play wmv files on any media player or internet browser. I have updated my video drivers and reinstalled wmp v10. I can play other types of videos, just not wmv and asx. When I try it closes the program. The only error code I seem to get is 0xc0000005. Please help.

What os do you have? Do you get an access violation message? Do you get a blue screen? Please provide more info. You should google on the error message.

Here is a rundown of my computer:
HP Pavilion A350N
Windows XP SP2 Home
2.80 GHZ Intel Pentium 4
160 GB Hard Drive
512MB DDR SDRAM
When I go to play a wmv file, I get a little box that says "Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." If I click on the error report and look at the technical info, it tells me Code: 0xc0000005. As far as I can find on Google, it has something to do with RAM. I have taken both RAM cards out and have cleaned them both with compressed air and put them in one at a time and it still doesn't work. Is it possible for both cards to be bad? The computer is only a year old and still under my extended warranty, but they said it sounded like a software problem which is not covered under warranty. I'm very frustrated.

Checking the RAM is a few too many steps down the line at the moment. Faulty RAM would effect much more than a single filetype, try downloading and installing WMV codecs again.

I have downloaded all new codecs from both Microsoft and another source and still can't get them to play. I ran memtest86 on my computer with no errors. I have recently run spyware, adware, registry cleaners, and other programs. Nothing that I have tried can get these files to play. I am having problems with other programs locking up and displaying the same error code such as Internet Explorer and Netscape and others.

Same exact problem. I can open the .wmv files in winamp, no problem.
I just cannot get them to open via WMP nor in browser (firefox 1.5/ie). Multiple versions of DivX and XviD.
Hm?
