Counter Strike problems

I bought counter strike and it wouldn't work when I went to custom game and tried to download all the new stuff. when that dodn't work, I went and downoaded steam and it still didn't work!?!? what should I do because i really love this game but cand play it.
FYI my computer sucks, but it still has:
p4 3.2 ghtz
geforce fx 5500 (256mb) (which REALLY sucks)
512 mb ddr 400 RAM
so it should be able to play it

You have to install steam, and download all the games, create an account with your cdkey and theres no reason why it shouldnt work unless your computer doesnt run it...
