Reformat of Inspiron 1150

I just reformatted my Inspiron 1150 that I purchased during the fall of 2004. I hooked up an Ethernet cord to the port and my laptop did not detect the connection nor did my Network Connections screen indicate anything. Do I have to upload a driver or activate some hardware?
Any help or link would be appreciated.
