7444 does not work for me to reset the Parental Control on my PS2!?!?!

What do I do now? I've tried the steps that everyone else suggested for resetting the parental control. I get to the prompt where it asks for the 4 digit code, enter "7444" and it says invalid code, and asks me to try again.
I'd love to play movies on my PS2, but it's not letting me.
I have no idea where my in-laws bought this unit, but it was definitely used and there's NO CHANCE whatsoever of finding the previous owner.
Help!
EDIT: I finally got it to work. I finally got the delete password prompt to come up. I think it had to do with hitting select before the 7444.

Yeah, you press select AFTER you enter the code.
