gta 3 Installation problem

I recently tried to install GTA 3 and all is fine with screen shots appearing while it is installing but after the installation is complete and I try to run the game all I get is the rockstar logo come up and then it disappears. I have tried both the "install" and "game" cd's.
my system is........
celeron 1.70 Ghz
256mb ram
XP PRO (with service pak 2)
ATI radeon (5600 I think) Direct X compatible.
Any help with this problem would be much appreciated
