Ok I was just wondering how easy it is to crack the core of a athlon CPU when you install a heatsink on it? I have read/heard stories of cracking the fragile core of the athlon by installing the heatsink on it!!! Is it that easy or are people just stupid and rush when they put it on. THe last cpu athlon t-bird 1 gig i bought a combo with the mother board and the heatsink was already installed. I have installed heatsinks on Intel Computers but never on an athlon.
Oh yeah a friend recommended a shim so the so u don't break the core. Do you really need to use one of those. I am thinking they are just a big waste.
Any input would be appreciated.

Depending on the heatsink design, it may be easy or not. You will find that most people who have destroyed an Athlon CPU installing a heatsink...were probably installing the wrong heatsink. It depends also on the clamping method used to attach the heatsink to the CPU socket. Some heatsinks require lots of force. If you press sideways instead of downwards...you might have problems. Some clamp designs require the use of a screw driver. Using this would require a steady hand.
If you follow the guide below..you should have no problem. Just ensure that the heatsink you are installing was made for the Athlon and have the proper support lip. There are some heatsinks that are labeled as an AMD/Intel solution. Stay away from such.
You want the middle article titled "Socket A AMD Processor and Heatsink Installation Guide".
