Hey all,
You've been very helpful with my hardware problems before, and now I come to you in hopes of fixing a software problem.
I bought BF2 and the installation went smooth. When I try to run the game, however, I get the Battlefield 2 splash screen, then it changes resolution as if it's loading the game, blacks out the screen as if it's loading the game, then just crashes to desktop...no error message or anything. My specs are as follows:
2Gigs DDR400 RAM
AthlonXP 3200+ processor
9800XT 256MB vid card
that should be totally sufficient for the game. EA says that the game is compatible with the 9800 series. I updated all sound drivers, video drivers, etc...patched the game...installed service pack 1...tried everything i could think of...same problem before and after each of these hotfixes
any ideas would be greatly appreciated! thanks in advance!

Well it seems your specs easily qualify for the game, but do you have a good power supply and cooling system? This could possibly be caused by over heating. Also do you have a firewall enabled? When I installed battlefield 2 it didn't work because when the game tried to start up, my firewall popped up and froze the game. If you do have a firewall, there is a very big possibility that may be causing your problem. If your firewall in enabled, try going into the firewall config and adding the Battlefield 2 executable to the trusted list. I hope all goes well and good luck!

ok that is a good idea...i never thought that BitDefender would prevent the game from loading up. Usually the firewall will only freeze a game once it tries to access the internet, and only until i tell it what to do...The window asking for internet access would at least stay up there for me to give it a response, but when i go home I will try to add the executable to BitDefender's "permitted" list.
As far as power and circulation/cooling goes
450W power supply
2 exhaust fans on the back of the case, each with individual knobs to control speed
1 exhaust fan on the side of the case
1 2-way blower inside the case
not to mention the power supply fan and processor fan, plus the thermal grease that I put on myself.
not too long ago I ran a processor/memory-intensive program (WoW) for a few hours, then turned off the computer to check fan speeds and system/processor temp. Processor and system were running at fully acceptable temperatures and the fans maintained a good 5k RPM the whole time, so that can't be the issue either
any other ideas before i go try the firewall thing? (still have another hour before i get home) Oh i read about the issues with emulation software. I uninstalled daemon tools and clonecd, and eventually had to uninstall nero (i thought nero's virtual drive - like daemon tool's - might possibly conflict with the game)...still to no avail

Nero is not causing the problem.
But just as a precausion, Open the PC case door an run it like that for a while. if it works? Then you still have to get a case fan or 2.
Also open the case and hide any cables as much as possible. Those can interrupt the airflow inside the case Especially, the wide grey, flat IDE cables from your drives. And you can actually get bad temps by that.
Download "Motherboard monitor 5" and keep check on the temps.
