Norton 05 messing with cs source
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)
Posted by: MadHatter
Out of no were, Norton Worm protection on Norton system works 05 seems to be bogging down cs source. It worked fine yesterday all if the sudden a message pops up saying that norton worm protection thinks half life 2 is a threat. Is that what is making my game lag...(like im playing drunk). Or could it be my video card, cause Ive noticed that the graphics seem to be a bit different.
appreciate the help

Hi!
Yes, Norton is together with Mc Affe. Is the 2 antivirus softwares that entangle themself most, with practically all software. Go to Symantec and get the uninstall software for it. And get rid of that crappy a.v.
Get a free antivirus like AVG or Avast instead. They are as good as the ones you pay for. And is much lighter on the resourses than the clumbsy Norton.
For firewall, I would recommend Sygate personal F.W. , free
I know you may feel suspisious against a free software beeing any good? But those antivirus and firewalls are free just for personal use. But if ju have a company? Then you will have to pay for the license.
And I have used both "pay for" antivirus and free. And I must say I like the free ones just as much. They do a decent job, keeping the crap away from my PC.

Hey thanks, ill get rid of norton then, its been nothing but trouble. Currently im uninstalling/reinstalling Hl2 and source, just to cover the bases. Ill grab one of those free av's, im sick of paying for an av that causes this much trouble....Nortons definatly not for gamers.
thanks agian goranpaa.

Hi!
you're welcome.
And no. Norton is'nt for gamers ....or for anyone lol.
Posted by: MadHatter
Hope you dont mind but I got to hit you up for one more question. I reinstalled hl2, got rid of norton, and still I get that drunk sensation when I play counterstrike or hl2 along with some weird lighting effects. So im thinking, the vid card must be bad. But I played some of the other games (Call of Duty, Guild Wars) and they seemed to work fine. Got any Ideas about what could be going on with Hl2? This all happend very suddenly..no previous problems with the software or vid card, except Norton was being stupid.
any info will help..
thanks

The only thing I can think of is try getting updates for the games.
Or this, (longshot) Try a new videocard driver?
I use modified drivers from Extreme. And often the modified drivers is the best ones. As they have enhanced support and better image quality and some improvements in FPS.
XTreme-G 78.03-HDv2 is a very good one.
You just register for free at the Extreme home. And you are free to download their drivers.
http://www.tweaksrus.com/
But uninstall your old driver first. And then use Driver Cleaner Pro, to get rid of old pieces of previous drivers.
You can find "Driver Cleaner Pro" here:
http://downloads.guru3d.com/
EDIT: Those weird lightning effects. How does they look like? Is it like snow or lines running here and there in the picture?
If you have a CRT monitor? Then try degaussing the monitor, by using one of the buttons on the mon. The ikon for degauss is a like a magnet.
It's also a good idea to degauss after installing a new driver.
Unfortunatly, I can't tell you wich button, as it differs from monitor to monitor.

Wow thanks, I have solutions to try now. As for what Im seeing, when I play CS the muzzle flash is weird....like its too bright and the modles seem to be off....they dont look quite the same like not as much detail. And theres the drunk feeling, controlls don't seem to respond as quick as they use to. But when I played Half Life 2, thats a different story. Stuff just went crazy, at one point in time I couldn't see what ever was in front of me, and the evironments would disappear and I would only see cascades of white , blue, red and green. But Ill give those drivers a shot.
thanks agian man

You could also do a check up on the Direct X. Go : Start + RUN.
In RUN type, msconfig. Use the diagnostic tools for direct X there. Make sure it is Direct X 9.0 c you have got.
Also update the Chipset driver.
Download "Everest Home" and Check out "Chipset" and "Northbridge Chipset"
When you have found out wich chipset it is? Go to the chipset manufacturer and download the driver.
The chipset driver affects the AGP port and USB ports for ex.
Here's the link for Everest Home:

....wow...check this out.
Well I nothing worked so I took a best buy gift card and bought another vid card. a geforce 6200. I installed the drivers on the cd, tryed to play hl2/counterstrike....everytime I try to initiate the program my entire system reboots and it sends an error report to microsoft. So i uninstalled the drivers and installed from the invidia website....same effect, system reboots and sends an error report..dude im totaly stumped.
agian I plead for your advice/help
thanks man

could you give me the error report?
What Wattage is your Powersupply? To be able to run the new Geforce 6 and 7 series cards, you will have to have at least a PSU of 430W. And of good quality. So it delivers rocksteady "Juice" at the 12 V Rail.
If you don't know what Wattage your PSU got? Open the case, and look at the label on the
PSU.
If you are going for a new PSU.
Here is a decently priced one with enough juice even for future upgrades:
ASPIRE CONCORD ATX-MR500W ATX 500W Power Supply 115/230 V cUL, FCC, CSA, CB, TUV, CE, NEMCO, DEMCO, SEMCO, TC - Retail $55.00. Newegg, webshop.
If it is'nt Your PSU, beeing too weak or unstable? Then it is the classical driver problem.
Go here and register for free: http://www.tweaksrus.com/
And try following Extreme drivers:
XTreme-G 78.03-HDv2.
XG.win2kxp77.76-HD
XG.win2kxp77.13-HD
Those modified drivers is a lot better than the orginal Nvidia drivers. They have enhanced support for series FX, 6 and 7 cards.
You will also get a better picture quality and better speed.
But uninstall the old driver, before you install a new driver.
And use a drivercleaner, like "Nvclean" in between installations.
Nvclean here:
http://downloads.guru3d.com/
Posted by: MadHatter
oh yea, windows says its a graphics driver error, i guess ill go and try those modified drivers, im just a little leary cause that burned me in the past, but I can always uninstall/reinstall. As for my Power suppy its a 550watt power supply so I hope thats not the problem. So...guess ill try new drivers. Is just funny that the last nvidia card worked fine with the drivers and this one dosn't. Oh well, i cant clam to understand.
thanks agian goranpaa

Then you will manage with the PSU you got.
What video card did you have before?
Edit. I have used Xtreme drivers for a long time now. And they are the only ones, allowing me to play all my games, including Halo and Far Cry, without problems.

If You have a registry cleaner/ repair software at hand? try this, as Windows xp, is a "world champion" lol, messing up the registry.
Or try downloadinng a registry repair.
Last resort: Get a no CD exe. for your game(s). They help sometimes when the orginal games exe. screw up.
Posted by: MadHatter
The card before was an geforce fx 5500, this new one is a geforce 6200 oc, and its playing every other game i have great, excpet hl2. I tryed dling the drivers from that website you gave and it didnt work,,,,(to be honest im not sure I dled the right thing, im not exactly tech savy and all I could do is fine nvidia 6 drivers...LOL i may have dled the wrong thing). The only registry cleaner I have is the one that came with norton. So If you have a suggestion for registry cleaner im all ears.
mad props to open tech support and to goranpaa, this site is the best ive seen for tech support.

You must register first t extreme home. Look to the right and there you will find "register".
Then after your registration is confirmed by email. You can download the drivers I suggested.
Go to "Downloads" and "Extreme G Forceware drivers" . Then choose 32 bit drivers.
Dont forget to get the driver cleaner from guru 3d also!
If you dont have the time to go to Extreme now? Then try this driver : http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1135
NVIDIA SVX StarStorm (77.76)
Or this Nvidia orginal 77.76.
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1133
A very good registry cleaner is Registry Mechanic. You can download a trial of it here:
http://www.winguides.com/software/display.php/42/
But in the trial, you just can only make 15 repairs per scan. So you may have a lot of scanning to do.
I have used Registry mechanic for a while now and I scan once week. Reg. Mech. always finds some registry errors, sometimes about 20 - 40 errors in windows. But I have on the other hand never experiensed any mayor problems with Windows, since I started to use R.M.
Thanks for the kind commend !
Posted by: goranpaa
As a very last resort, I would recommend you to reinstall Windows. I know it is a pain job to do. But I have heard of some guys installing a new Geforce 6 or 7 series card, that have fixed their problem, doing so.
Also try update your Chipset driver. This driver affects all your ports. Including the AGP.
If you dont know wich chipset driver you got? Download "Everest Home" and check out "Chipset" and Northbridge chipset".
Then go to the Chipset driver manufacturer and download the driver.
If you got "Nforce" chipset? Then it is Nvidia, you should visit.
Also update your BIOS.
Here you can find Everest H:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/everest.html
Posted by: goranpaa
I don't know if those problems is due to that Nvidia did'nt intend to make the series 6 or any future video cards for AGP in the beginning. But the demands for AGP versions made them sort of "convert" their PCI Express series 6 cards to AGP.
It took them a long while to adapt their drivers for those new cards. And I'm not fully convinced they have succeded 100% yet.
Posted by: MadHatter
Well.... I loaded up the drivers you suggested. Still didn't work. And it just with half life 2 software. Im one click short of reformatting the whole pc. All my other games still work, its just half life. But it dosn't make since....still the same error..( error due to graphics driver) but it happens with every driver I put in.
Still open to suggestions...if this keeps up ill probly just save all my stuff to disk and wipe it clean.
scott D.
thanks for all your help/ let me know if you have any more ideas.

Try a NO cd exe file. Just make sure you get the correct file version. This depending on that the U.S and the European Game version differs slightly or if you have patched the game.
I use No Cd:s as I think it's nice not to have to use the CD. And as the copy protection on the legal games is so complicated nowadays, it could even be hard to get the game to start up. OR it could be a corrupt exe file on the game.
So if a game I bought gives me trouble. I load a No CD. And many times this have fixed my problem.
Google for a No CD for the game.
It could be worth a try as then you maybe doesnt have to reformat.
But I think it's pretty ironical, you must sometimes turn to pirate stuff to make a legally bought game to work.
Posted by: MadHatter
LOL...that is ironic, Well in my search to fix this one problem for this one game I have discovered basicly......alot of system instability. Im really thinking of reformatting and starting from scratch. The only problem I have now is I need to back my important stuff up, and I have two hard drives, the second was fairly easy to put in, but I dont now how you reformatte a computer with two hard drives when one is the mirror of the other.
Those are some pretty kickn' system specs you got goranpaa,,,,you planning to build a 64bit system in the future??? Im just wondering if/when everyone plans to do that
later
Scott D.
Posted by: goranpaa
Hi!
Well. The best way, would be to back up your important stuff on CD or DVD.
And later on, do as I did . Get a simple IDE HD and an external USB enclosure . This is a great way to store your important stuff. And you can have it on or off at will. I have 2, 80 gig of this kind of USB HDs.
I sometimes bring my external drive to my friends, when needed. This is very handy, instead of having to burn CD:s every time you want to bring some stuff along.
"Building" your own External drive is actually cheaper than buying a premade one.
Thanks. Yeah, I'm going AMD 64 3000+ and the new DFI Lanparty UT SLI mobo and another 6600GT . The DFI mobo is one hell of an overclocker!
I got this Albatron "Hybrid" P4 mobo, just because I could'nt afford getting both a new CPU and a new PCX video card + mobo, at the same time. And besides I like the Northwood, for its very good O.C. capability.
I think, that as you anyway must reinstall your RAID drvers while reinstalling, you have the possibility to reformat the drives in the windows setup.
I'm no wiz when it comes to RAID. But another way, would be to unplug one of the drives, install windows on the other HD and then reformat the other drive afterwards. And then redo the RAID setup. I'm not 100% sure this will work. But maybe worth a try?
Posted by: goranpaa
But when getting a 64 bit Windows, the OS experts on the net, says to wait for the 64 bit Longhorn Windows. This is released 2006. And I will wait even longer, before I get a 64 bit Windows, as it took Microsoft some years, to get 32 Bit XP where it is today.
But a AMD 64 PC, I will build as soon as possible.
Posted by: MadHatter
COOL..
Yea im an AMD man myself. They seem to be pretty good for gaming. I have been looking at the ASEUS..(spelling) MB's with the N-Force for chipsets and SLI tech. Im thinking AMD 643500,,,than agian im going to be going on a budget....you think a amd643000 will be enough for most gaming?????? I hear Vista (witch i think is the selling name for Long Horn) will be out christmas of 06, so we got about a year before we see it. The way games are running..(hl2 for example) they are definatly straining 32bit hardware to its limits.
Well i havnt decided to reformat just yet,,,,,messing with the drivers you suggested...(they run my other games GREAT by the way)
Ill let you know how it goes
Scott D.
Posted by: goranpaa
Hi ! If you are going for a PCI express SLI. I would suggest MSI:s or Epox mobos. I belive you can manage well with a 3000+. Othervice you can always Overclock.
Here is a couple of nice decently priced mobos for ya:
EPoX EP-9NPAJ SLI Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail $129.00
MSI K8N Neo4/SLI Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail $119.50
Or if you just wanna go ASUS:
ASUS A8N-SLI Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard $135.00
Prices from newegg, webshop.
By the way, Did you see any difference in image quality with the modded drivers?
p.s The Epox mobo. have got very nice test reviews and the customers seems to like it also, from what I have read.
And why I decied on that DFI Lanparty mobo. Is because I wanna be able to, O.C. the CPU "To kingdom comes". lol!
Posted by: MadHatter
WOW...thanks for the infor on the mb's.
And yes...i definatly see a difference with the modifyed drivers. Quality, and the game seems to run smoother...i wish had a better video card but the quality with these drivers is very nice. Thanks for everything. (by the way) i reinstalled the game a final time + the drivers you suggested + i put my old 256 geforce 5500 back in....and its running fine. I think steam is having a few bugs but my machine is doing great. i dl'ed day of defeat source and it runs like a dream.
agian...thanks for walking me through this
and when i purchase parts for a 64 bit system im definatly going to seek your advice.
thanks agian

Hi again!
You're welcome!
Great that you liked the modified drivers! I myself, only use the Extreme drivers nowadays. I have tried a couple of Nvidia orginal drivers just for fun, But the image quality is dull, compaired to the modded drivers. And as you pointed out. The games, seems to run smoother with a modded driver. I can for example get Halo CE and Far Cry, to run at higher quality settings.
Pity, you could'nt run your 6200 card. But I have the feeling that the PCI Xpr. versions of the Geforce 6 and 7 card are more problemfree than the AGP versions. Maybe it is due to the converting Nvidia did from the PCI Expr. cards to AGP?
I had more problems with my Leadtek 6600GT AGP, than I have with this PCI Expr. card.
Just hoot, when it's time for you to get the new rig. And I will try to help you find the nice stuff.
But for a start. The Epox mobo and the AMD64. 3000+ , will make a nice beginning.

hey again
Tell me what you think of ordering pc's online. I love building my own,,,,but i must admit building it online and having it delivered is pretty tempting. (warrentys are nice too). I was checking out a few websites just to see what the options were.. would you order from a site, got any suggestions, or do you always intend to build yourself?
just wanted your opinion
Scott. D
Posted by: goranpaa
Well, I myself prefer building the rigs. This because I get exactly the stuff I want in there and I know how it is mounted.
But as you correctly point out. you have'nt got any warranty on the rig as such. Only the different hardwares.
And It will be hard to find a premade, that got the stuff I intended to suggest to you. And prebuilds have another "backside" They cost more.
Posted by: goranpaa
I took the liberty to try to find a nice rig suggestion for you. And I assume that you are looking for a new Case and PSU also?
Case: Thermaltake XASER, Armor Series VA8000BWS Black Aluminum/Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case - Retail $139.00
PSU: Antec TruePower 2.0 TP2-550 EPS12V ATX12V 550W Power Supply 115/230 V UL, TUV, CB, FCC CLASS B, CUL - Retail $110.00

Prices from newegg.
Posted by: MadHatter
WOW...THANKS!!!!
It will take me a lil bit to save the cash up but man thats a nice rig, and reasonable priced too. I appreciate you doing that research for me. And yes...i would start from scratch the stuff I have is out dated to say the least. Well...the case is ok and I have a beefy power supply, but the mb (M7NCD-PRO) is running on the N-Force 2 chip set, and I got 1.25g ram wich I guess is enough. The main things are the vid card and mb. ...(but ive never had a good time syncing new mb's with old hard drives..LOL)
thanks for the tips
Scott D.
Posted by: goranpaa
Well, If you use the old case, PSU and RAM. You will get away with a decent cost. You may even have saved enough by using the old case, PSU and RAM to get 2 X 6600GT:s in SLI directly? I have a friend in Belfast, Who did run a single 6600Gt at first. And he whas truly amazed, When he finally got his second PCI Expr. 6600GT and loaded the videocards in SLI.
And that Hitachi SATA II is an extremely fast 7200 RPM HD. It even plays even with the W.D. Raptor in read tests.
Posted by: MadHatter
what do you think about those dual core processers......like the amd64x2's...it is better to fork over the money for one of those..or are you ok with a regualr amd 64??
scott
Posted by: goranpaa
Hi again!
The AMD X2 Processors is a very nice CPU.
But I really dont know if this dual core have any real impact when gaming? I guess it will be some performance improvement, when multitreaded games starts to come.
But when multitasking it must be very good.
I saw a differnce when I changed my Previous Northwood, for the one I got now. The new one got Hypertreading, wich is a kind of "Fake dual processor" As the HT, makes Windows belive it's 2 processors present. And I emediatly saw the difference when working in several programmes at the same time. So A real dual core, must really make a differnce.
But if you get, lets say a AMD 64 3700+, you will have one hec of a CPU anyway. And to a completely different price.
AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego 1GHz FSB 1MB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor - Retail $269.00
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ 1GHz FSB 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Dual Core Processor - Retail $352.96
This could also be a alternative, as It got 0.13 micron core And I have heard it is a "gaming monster". The 0.13 micron core (The same as Northwood) also guarantee that it is a very good overclocker, as this core stays very cool.
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ ClawHammer 1GHz FSB 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor - Retail $231.00
prices from newegg.
Posted by: MadHatter
COOL...
As always your an amazing source of info. Thanks agian.....for the money ill be taking your advice on the regular 64's, no need to mess with a dual core for now.
Scott D.
Posted by: goranpaa
Thanks for the kind words.
Yeah, I think going single core is a wise move.
And I think it will take a good while, before the multi tread games will be a comon thing.
And who knows, then what processors there will be when that happends?
Maybe even the X2 is pretty obsolete by then?
I think the best "bang for buck" . Having performance and price in mind, would be this AMD:
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice 1GHz FSB 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor - Retail $190.00
So if you feel the other AMD.s I recommeded, is on the expensive side? Then the 3200+ will be a very nice alternative. And hey! it is a pretty speedy CPU anyway.
Posted by: goranpaa
Forgot to add. If you wanna have superior air cooling?
Then the combination: Arctic Silver thermal paste + Thermalright XP 90C (Picture) And the 52 CFM. 21 db Thermaltake Silent Cat ( picture) 90 mm fan is a very good alternative! But if you find the 630 gram XP90C too heavy? Then the "normal" XP 90 just weighs half of the XP 90 C ( XP 90 made out of Aluminium).
You can find the stuff at newegg, webshop.

Your solution to the problem is wrong sir, you did not even attempt to solve the problem by look at what was causing it. If you had you would have known that all you have to do is click on the Options button in norton, click on Internet worm protection under internet tag then click add and create a rule that will allow all inbound UDP traffic and viola no more pop ups. On the other hand there is a security risk if you dont employ the correct counter measures.
