Setting up a home network for the first time...

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

This is my first post, so hopefully nobody will chew me out. ^_^

I'm looking to set up a very simple home network. I've got two boxes, one with XP Home, one with XP Pro. Each one has a nice Ethernet card. I've also got Cat5e as far as the eye can see. ^_^ I've got a little Linksys Switch to hopefully patch the whole thing together, and an SBC-Yahoo DSL (Speedstream?) modem that I'd love to share between them.

Now, I've seen a fair few number of posts on doing something like this, but most of them seem to concern themselves with getting a router in place... and I'd like to be able to do this without additional cost if at all possible. (If not, then could someone suggest a good router? ^_^)

(Additionally, the posts that I have seen seem to indicate that the SBC-Yahoo DSL requires a little... jiggling?... to work as we would like it to, rather than as SBC and Yahoo would generally intend. (Spyware, browser-hijacking, etc. etc.))

I don't really have any networking experience, so for the purpose of this exercise you may want to treat me as an entry-level moron... but I learn quickly, so any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated and hopefully I won't be net-stupid too much longer. ^___^
