MS Messenger and the Linux operating system

At home I used to have a Windows XP system,; at work I have access to a Linux-based computer. I've heard that the Messenger Protocal could work with GAIM Internet Messanger no matter what the operating system. Is that true?
We use GAIM to communicate within our office on both types of computers. I can't seem to get it to accept my login and passwords I use to use when I had a working internet connection at home.
Could my login and password with MS Messenger have changed without me knowing about it?
Your help will be appreciated.
