You should be able to see values on the memory chips (assuming they're not covered with a heatsink?), however if both the BIOS and Windows say 32MB I'd tend to believe that so it sounds like 32MB has died? It will only run at 8x if your MOBO supports it and 8x support is enabled in the BIOS, I'd get Rivatuner and you can tweak away to your hearts content.

in the bios of my soyo dragon mobo i can actualy set how much video ram i want the computer to use, yours might aswell.

my bios is set to take up to 128mb ram...and my old card was also 64mb (sd) ( my new card is 64mb ddr) But today im going to test it in my friends computer.

well i tried the card in a different computer and same problem, so im assuming the probelm is the card itself...any ideas how to fix it?

In that case it sounds like the card is a duffer, as you bought it off a friend I take it back to them and ask to see it working in their machine or give you your money back? As you can get a 128MB FX5200 (better than your MX440 for about £25 today) I wouldn't have bothered, if you wanted to buy a MX440 today they cost about £15 new (if you can find one).

You can get this at newegg: XFX PVT18LRT Geforce MX4000 128MB 64-bit DDR AGP 4X/8X Video Card - Retail $33.00

But honestly. If you just want a cheap videocard? Then Chainlinks idea is better.
or a Radeon 9250.

CHAINTECH LA-FX20-H Geforce FX5200 128MB 64-bit DDR AGP 4X/8X Video Card - Retail $36.50

MSI RX9250-TD128 Radeon 9250 128MB 128-bit DDR AGP 4X/8X Video Card - Retail $39.50

Prices, newegg webshop.

well the cost wasnt a big deal, i only paid 25$ canadian for a stick of 256 sd ram and the video card so i dont really care about that. i was just hoping id be able to get it working to its full ability. k well now i have a new question. wut wuld b better a mx440 running at 32mb ddr ram or the 420 64mb sd ram?

Posted by: goranpaa

The 420 64 mb.

Posted by: getafewlives

what makes you think the 420 is better? i would have assumed the 440 was still better because it has othe rbetter features ad the ram maybe half the amount but its ddr and isnt that like twice as good?

Posted by: goranpaa

Yeah, but 32 mb is a VERY small amount of RAM. Even 64mb is questionable, except for workstation PC:s.

And even if the 420 lacks the DDR, it will win.

If you look at all modern videocards of today 128mb is minimum and some ( Radeon cards even got 500mb).

Small amount of RAM in videocards leads to stuttering picture and even lockups, when the card tries to hande graphic intence programs.

The MX series cards is mostly intended for workstations, and the games, that where modern, when the card whas released some years ago.

The only reason that MX series "lives on" Is that PC manufacturers buys a cargo load of it for nearly nothing. And put in their budget machines, as an alternative to integrated videochips. That thank god, is on the way to dissapear from the motherboards.

And It is sold to people that want a very cheap "what so ever videocard" And who does'nt care about games or the image quality. Or does'nt know anything about PC:s and videocards.

Agreed, the MX4xx series are OK if you want a DX7 video card (they only made the GF4Ti series DX8) that has OK 2D performance and will play most of todays 3D games at slideshow frame rates. Admittedly most of the lower end video cards (MX4xx, FX5200, 6200, X300, etc.) will struggle to play recent games at a decent framerate but you get what you pay for in the land of graphics cards.

I've been planning on upgrading my card (of course), but oddly enough, I haven't experienced any slow play or stuttering with graphics. The only problem I've had is that the MX series doesn't support pixel shading.

I must admit I do sometimes wonder about the minimum graphics requirements for games as I've seen stuff play OK on machines that shouldn't have worked at all. Bear in mind that games like Half Life 2 run different levels of DirectX depending on the card you've got (removing pretty stuff from low end cards) whereas other games just refuse to run if your card can't manage the level of DirectX the game needs.
